Description

Sweet Chestnut is a durable, straight growth, dimensionally stable timber well suited to use in buildings. However, very little UK grown sweet chestnut is used in construction. The majority is converted into fencing or burnt as biomass. A Forest Owner Account - for those who own or manage a single property which contains forested land (or land which they wish to use for forest creation); or

We know that woodland owners and managers often express concern about how to manage their woodlands in the rapidly changing environment. Sylva Foundation and Forest Research are working together to increase knowledge exchange between myForest users and forest scientists. We have developed new tools within myForest to enable users to collect and share data from their woodlands that could help support forestry science and how the appropriate use of knowledge could benefit woodland management. Why should I take part? You can find the tool in the myForest Platform, a focused GIS software allowing woodland owners and managers to map, plan, and manage their woodlands. myForest • home (sylva.org.uk) Screenshot of the myForest Woodland Assessor There are several common issues users encounter when trying to import mapping into myForest, including: If you want to create a woodland plan, you should include all woodland on your property. How to produce your plan

Climate Risk Indicators is a free online tool to visualise UK climate change data, including average, minimum and maximum temperatures, rainfall, and temperature extremes. It provides indicators of risk including for wildfire, agriculture, river levels, and transport. Information and a How to Guide are included within the Tool and through the Climate Resilience Programme. The UK Forestry Standard sets out the UK government’s approach to sustainable forestry and woodland management, including standards and requirements, regulations and monitoring, and reporting. It applies to all woodland and woodland operations, regardless of who owns or manages it. Why create a management plan? The Woodland Management Focus Area Pilot is developing a methodology to locate currently unmanaged woodlands which have the lowest barriers to management with the aim to engage woodland owners and ultimately bring more woodlands into management. During 2021 we will be refining and retesting outputs with stakeholders beyond the Northern Forest in a second tree planting season. Finally, further support and advice is provided to woodland owners by helping them evaluate their woodland against the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) using the myForest Woodland Assessor developed by the Sylva Foundation with the aim to produce a UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) compliant Woodland Management Plan.

The next step of the pilot project is to help woodland owners identified in the focus areas use and understand the myForest Woodland Assessor and the benefits it can bring to the woodland and woodland owner.
