Buffy and her buddies begin to realize the longer the big bad is out there, the more monsters appear. Added to this is that at times the game presents a puzzle to be solved, such as which baddies to fight and which townies to protect and save, as well as who can fight the monster of the week or the Big Bad, where the players bring their heads together to try and solve it, good for player interaction in a co-op game and good for people who like puzzles but the sudden halt can be jarring and can create a stop-start feel to the game. Slaying the generic vampires and demons, again the artwork though nice, ran out and each vampire and demon token is identical to the next.

Once the monster of the week is dead, it leaves a clue in its location, three monsters of the week equals three clues. If you haven't watched through the entirety of both "Buffy" and "Angel," there will most likely be a lot of spoilers.

Buffy: The Board Game doesn’t seem to be willing to make a stand on which kind of game it wants to be and the end result is something that I can’t recommend to anyone. Throughout the struggle wounds and dead townies fill up the apocalypse track and if it ever gets to 13 that is the end of the game and the good guys loose, but if the scoobies stop three plots of the big bad then they claim victory!Buffy simply works within an established framework to deliver an experience of slaying vampires and defeating the Big Bad, instead of eradicating diseases or putting out a fire. A board game can only cover so much ground, so when you’re playing with people who can recite lines from the show and know why certain thematic elements are used, it’s much more fun.

The game with my wife ended in victory when Giles tossed the necessary tools to Buffy who won the third and final confrontation with the big bad just before the monster swarm devoured enough townies to trigger the hell-mouth.Some stand-ups are double-sided, such as Spike's, showing his "normal" face on one side and his "vampire" face on the other. Each requires two items for a character to discard and pass a combat check to defeat; each has a unique ability that has some theming to the TV show, but again the original art has run out when it comes to these cards and in fact there is no artwork for these creatures so unless you know your Buffy The Vampire Slayer very well you might not remember who or what these creatures are without it. I would likely have been toast, but another player, playing Willow, used the Spell of Good Summoning to bring me all the way across the board to Sunnydale High. The plot twists can sometimes feel a bit arbitrary, and occasionally a badly shuffled deck can ruin the game if too many come up at once. Should a baddie not already be occupying a space containing a character or another townie they’ll begin to move around the board, seeking adjacent townsfolk or heading straight for the nearest player.
