Overall, I found installing the software cumbersome but, once installed, easy and intuitive to use. There is a manual, and the options on the live feed to change the filming style are straight forward. What’s promising is that Xiaomi are providing lots of updates the camera firmware and also the app. While it does add to the initial cost, the companion gimbal is excellent. The build quality is premium, it extends the cameras battery life and lets you get your #spielberg on like a pro.

In terms of field of view, the MiJia Mini’s is slightly narrower. I actually prefer this as with the GoPro I spend a lot of time moving in closer to the subject.

The Yi 4K+ has a standard tripod thread on the bottom, which is a boon for anyone wanting to connect it to the plethora of mounts available (as well as a standard camera tripod). Despite the natively easy to use Yi 4K+ not requiring a good app to make the device usable (which is so often the case), its free Yi Action app is impressive. The fact that Action 4’s isn’t interwoven with subscription software is one we wholeheartedly appreciate, too, but GoPro seem to finally growing out of this.

Additionally, the 4k offered on the Xiaomi Mi 4K is not native 4k and is digitally upscaled from the 2k resolution. Although this is still common in entry-level action cameras even to this day, it has been implemented poorly in the Xiaomi Mi 4K action camera and results in poor image quality. Native 4k tends to be better and smoother as it is natively captured via the camera’s sensor but the technology costs more and hikes the price tag up. This allows cameras such as the Akaso V50 Pro that offer native 4k to push out ahead of the Xiaomi Mi 4K and take more of the market share with their superior technology and lower price point. Resolution–Numbers above 4K are impressive, though you'll likely end up editing down to 4K, where most better TVs are. It still helps have some room to crop though! As mentioned earlier the Xiaomi Mijia action camera has electronic image stabilization and lens distortion feature. but the stabilization will only work in 1080p. degree cameras are a category of their own, but this can do everything other action cameras can – and more – for a similar spend. It's worth a serious look. After all, you can't miss a thing! The extra real estate offered by the 2.19-inch screen does make onscreen menus easy to navigate. It’s also reasonably sharp. It offers readouts on the shooting mode it's in – video or photos, with an indicator of the resolution, too – as well as an icon for the remaining battery charge. Along the top, sandwiched between two microphones, is a single button that both switches-on the YI 4K Action Cam, and activates and deactivates recording.

There’s a variety of different features you can play around with including time lapse, slow motion, burst and loop record. The timer has options of a 3, 5, 10 or 15-second countdown to get those perfect solo or group shots! Alongside it is a microSD card slot; YI recommends a variety of U3-class micro SD cards, though Class 10 and U1 cards work just as well in practice; a 64GB card will give you about 80 minutes of 4K recording. You’ll also need two of them for full 360 video immersion, which will cost over double the Xiaomi MiJia 360.Settings Icon– You’ll find this in the bottom right of the viewfinder screen and it’ll give you access to all of your filming settings. There are a few teething problems which when exporting the 360 pictures and video to other platforms. Exporting to Google Street view, so that you can embed pictures, changed the vertical alignment in some pictures. I’m sure Xiaomi are aware of these problems and will be releasing fixes in future updates. It’s worth mentioning the Kodak PIXPro SP360 as it hands-down beats the Xiaomi MiJia 360 in terms of video quality and resolution. But, it does suffer from stitch marks and requires a technical post editing of videos to get a premium finish. Rather than messing around with the fiddly Micro-SD card you can export all your footage to your phone via the Mi Home App. Additionally, although the Xiaomi Mi 4K does offer some electronic image stabilization technology, in our opinion it is dated and definatley showing its age. The latest Akaso and Apeman advanced, next-generation electronic image stabilization blows the Xiaomi tech on the Mi out the water without even being comparable. On top of this, due to the Xiaomi Mi 4K not using a similar factor to the GoPro range, it is a nightmare to find a cheap gimbal stabilizer for the camera that can provide you with image stabilization.

Finishing off with the battery life of the camera, Xiaomi has used the higher 1450mAh battery rather than the smaller capacity batteries that most of the compeating cameras use. Unfortunately, due to using digitally upscaled 4k video footage, this advantage is nulled due to the additional power required to capture the 4k and upscale it making the camera offer a lower maximum battery life than the compeating cameras with a smaller battery. Probably the most important reason to use the Mi Home App is so that you can update the MiJia to the latest firmware version. With each new firmware version comes improvements and enhancements to the camera.

Unlike the original Yi 4K, this new version recharges via USB-C port , and in the box is an adaptor for hooking-up an external microphone. It takes a microSD card up to 64GB. Most importantly, all these features really bring out the potential of each and every photo. This is because all these shooting modes are supported by a Sony IMX317 sensor that captures images in 1080p at 60fps. Additionally, The images are further elevated by the stabilisation function, making it the best budget action camera. Like the more famous competition, DJI has high-quality horizon balancing and image stabilization, which has improved on the Action 3. The resolution limit is 4K, but in practice, this is the ideal resolution for action (and the limit of almost all TVs). More useful is the 120fps capability (or 240fps at 1080P). Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the Xiaomi MiJia 360 Action Camera’s build quality and discrete design. Whilst it’s not designed to survive drops, nor does it come with a protective housing, it will handle most weather conditions without you having to worry.
