Mick Manningand Brit Granstromhave won many awards for their non-fiction picture books, including the Smarties Silver Award and the English Association Award. Increasingly capable tail gunner positions were developed during the interwar period and the Second World War, resulting in the emergence of the powered turret and fire control systems incorporating radar guidance. The ASL fingerspelling provided here is most commonly used for proper names of people and places; it is also used in some languages for concepts for which no sign is available at that moment. Christmas celebrations during the Second World War often had to be scaled down or adjusted as restrictions and shortages took their toll.

While the term tail gunner is usually associated with a crewman inside a gun turret, the first tail guns were operated from open apertures within the aircraft's fuselage, such as the Scarff ring mechanism used in the British Handley Page V/1500, which was introduced during latter months of the First World War. Night after night they stifled their fears and flew through flak and packs of enemy fighters to drop the bombs that would demolish the Third Reich. Rivaling the best of Stephen Ambrose's work, Tail-End Charlies gives a breathtakingly intimate look at the lives, loves, and deaths of the brave airmen of the greatest generation.Especially vulnerable were the "tail-end Charlies"---for the Americans, which meant two things: the gunners who flew countless missions in a plexiglass bubble at the back of the bomber, and the last bomber in the formation who ended up flying through the most hell, and for the British, the rear-gunners who flew operations in a Plexiglas bubble at the back of the bomber. I am somewhat biased in reading this book as one of the principle characters - Bob Pierson - was my father.

This is still controversial to this day and the man his actions, their consequences and Bomber Command are regarded as pariahs even now. This account of one RAF man's war fits perfectly with imaginative illustrations, many of which are a collage of real war memorabilia. Even more so to watch other aircraft in the squadron get shot out of the sky and knowing that his plane would be next to go down, regardless of how many rounds of ammunition he fired off. Most bombing missions in the 21st century are carried out by unmanned drones, but the sheer volume of manpower used in the bomber squadrons of the Second World War is an example of how humanity fought its wars only decades ago. Warfare has moved on, to the point that heavy bombers manned by half a dozen men are no longer required. While the book does a good job of describing the last year of the war and especially puts the reader in the experiences of the pilots and gunners of these planes, the author often spends time arguing in circles regarding decisions from Bomber Command. This fascinating book is as valuable for its stories of joyous life on the ground as it is for its sobering tales of death in the air. Much of that probably isn't much of a surprise to the average WWII enthusiast, although there are probably some new-to-you anecdotes.

Interesting contemporary ephemera, including magazines, comics and playing cards, bring information and variety. George McGovern "Rivaling the best of Stephen Ambrose's work, Tail-End Charlies gives a breathtakingly intimate look at the lives, loves, and deaths of the brave airmen of the greatest generation. Artillery fire from below was a threat to knockout the bombers defences, but the elements would also be a risk. The first Chamberlain tractor produced was the model 40k which had 40 horsepower (30kW) twin-cylinder, horizontally opposed engines. What I found most enlightening and fascinating, however, was that this book also goes into great depth about the differences between the British and American strategies and crew management, and in particular the career and motivations of Sir Arthur Harris, who was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
