Description

The concept of freedom of education and expression remains a topical issue in 2020, and Joanna has made a significant impact on the development of higher education in the United States. Phillips recognises this and claims that his conservatism is ‘postmodern’, that there is no going back to an earlier time in which duty, loyalty and discipline were part of the fabric of everyday life. We need to have free speech to involve more and more people in our democratic institutions and put far more issues to the public to let them have their say rather than it being a protected realm of a small elite. No matter what else can be said about the quality of its output, Channel 4 clearly still excels at riding the cultural zeitgeist.

How woke won - The Telegraph

Survey after survey suggests that most people do not identify as woke, yet woke thinking now dominates advertising, publishing, the media, civil service and our education system. If you were asked to picture a politician who makes impassioned statements about abortion rights in the US, who flaps on about Donald Trump, and who is pictured touring marijuana farms in Los Angeles, then you would probably picture a young, left-wing upstart in the US Democratic Party. A few years ago, he conducted every post-match interview with an Australian accent just for the hell of it.All too often, the sense of virtue that comes from claiming to act on behalf of the disadvantaged and oppressed legitimises a refusal to countenance dissent – and a ruthlessness at dealing with those seemingly in opposition to the woke mission. Joanna is the author of Women vs Feminism (2017); Academic Freedom in an Age of Conformity (2016) and Consuming Higher Education Why Learning Can’t Be Bought (2011). Joanna “pokes the hornets’ nest” of the Woke orthodoxy and elaborates on how we arrived at a woke society, and whose interests it really serves.

How duty can set us free - spiked

This hilarious piece by Gareth Roberts boasts – I think – our best headline of 2022: ‘The rise of the heterosexual queer’.The latest poll shows that half the support lost by Sinn Féin is likely to go to other nationalist parties, but only a quarter of votes lost by the DUP may go to other Unionists.

The Northern Ireland Protocol is wreaking havoc - spiked

Dismissing something as “woke” is similarly a means of marking out territory rather than engaging in meaningful debate. The presenter is so fond of using the word ‘woke’, he even argued with radio host James O’Brian about its true meaning. And while we’re on the subject of environmentalism, Andrew Orlowski’s blistering piece on the truth about electric cars is well worth your time if you missed it earlier this year.

Take a step back from the Russell Brand scandal and you see that a clear cultural shift has taken place – not towards treating victims with respect, as is so often claimed, but towards treating all women as victims. It is also anti-democratic, woke activists try to impose change from top down, while denying that woke even exists. The good news is that whenever woke thinking is subjected to free speech and democratic scrutiny, it falls short. It is also a reminder that what critics of woke need is, firstly, courage to speak out in the certain knowledge that they are not lone voices and that woke is not popular.

Jokes are not violence – this is violence - spiked

Two YouTube comics who showed up to show support for Chappelle – brandishing signs with such menacing slogans as ‘We like Dave’ and ‘Jokes are funny’ – had their signs broken and one had his head bounced off a concrete planter. But a close second has got to go to Jo Bartosch’s ‘ An overweight bloke just won a Miss America beauty pageant’, which also rather speaks for itself.
