I have finished putting into words what I consider to be an extreme human experience, hearing on life and death, time, law, ethics and taboo ‒ an experience that sweeps through the body. As women, so much of our experience resides in the body; Ernaux’s lifelong project of rendering her own in writing – from the rape her younger self cannot name as such to her abortion, her experience of desire – has profoundly feminist implications, as much now as ever. I'm not going to send my daughters to a bar without talking to them about alcohol and drugs and the risk of leaving your glass somewhere, but we tend to leave children with access to the Internet without talking to them about what that involves. In the book, Ernaux reflects that although she is writing from a time when abortion has become legal, this doesn’t lessen the importance of talking about reproductive rights.
