About this deal

It jeopardises everything she – and by extension, her parents, who are supporting her unusual ambitions – has been working for. There is truth to this, though I picture her more as being on her hands and knees in the earth, dusting off and assembling fragments.

The "Fandangoe Skip" was created, an ice cream kiosk that looks like two skips - one upturned on top of the other. Getting Lost is a diary she kept during a passionate affair with a married man – a love affair she also described in her work Simple Passion. To accept the turmoil of reproduction inside my body and, in turn, to let the coming generations pass through me.

In her body, in the way she walks, in her gaze, her gestures, she brings into existence, in the strongest sense of the word, the ordinariness of this tragedy: going to class, or to a student party, and having to find a solution, and then money, because time is inexorably moving forward within her body.

Diwan stays close to Anne’s perspective; we spend much of the film looking directly over Vartolomei’s shoulder. I had climaxes and multiple climaxes and all those things with conventional sex, but this is so different,” says Annie, who started the practice just over a few years ago. Her protagonist is a woman who, like so many of Ernaux’s readers, identifies as a “ class defector”. Filming Vartolomei attempting to perform her own abortion by sticking a knitting needle up her vagina, Diwan stays with her just long enough that it is agonising to witness, without it tipping into voyeurism or trauma porn.

ERIKA LUST: I find them to be two interesting people with a lot to say, and we have a lot to learn from their relationship. Ernaux’s acute awareness of the formative influence of class underpins her entire body of work and in the wake of her win, many in France praised her work for its ongoing focus on the French working-class experience. In describing what was at stake for Diwan filming that scene, Ernaux told me, “it was important to dare to confront the viewer with an unbearable image… I did it in my book, but I knew it would be a more difficult proposition to do it in the film. I could see everything that separated me from that girl yet I wouldn’t have known what to do to resemble her. Nominated for the International Booker Prize in 2019, The Years made English-speaking audiences aware of her work – and that attention has now happily been extended by the jury of the Nobel prize in literature.

Anne: A Taboo Parody (2018) — The Movie Database (TMDB)

The young woman in the library, Anne, is a literature student from a working-class background; the unwanted pregnancy occurs just as the year is drawing to a close and she is studying for her exams. I have finished putting into words what I consider to be an extreme human experience, hearing on life and death, time, law, ethics and taboo ‒ an experience that sweeps through the body. As women, so much of our experience resides in the body; Ernaux’s lifelong project of rendering her own in writing – from the rape her younger self cannot name as such to her abortion, her experience of desire – has profoundly feminist implications, as much now as ever. I'm not going to send my daughters to a bar without talking to them about alcohol and drugs and the risk of leaving your glass somewhere, but we tend to leave children with access to the Internet without talking to them about what that involves. In the book, Ernaux reflects that although she is writing from a time when abortion has become legal, this doesn’t lessen the importance of talking about reproductive rights.

A painting, a book, or a film that depicts an abortion ‘puts something into the world’: it’s no longer something personal, hidden, or only a women’s problem, but that it concerns all of humanity. ALLURE: We’re living longer lives than ever before, so watching John and Annie gives me hope that my sex life will be long, too. That connection was all the more special because Annie's parents had lived in southern Portugal and, after family meals, they would often walk to the local ice cream parlour.
