Description

Pretty much everything you'd ever want to know about a grammar point is included, the images above don't really do this dictionary justice. Today I’m going to share my A Dictionary Of Basic Japanese Grammar review, which is a book that was written back in the 80s by Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui. Each sentence pattern is accompanied by a straightforward explanation and several Japanese examples with kanji, kana, and romaji. Overall, it constitutes a standard reference for Japanese and can be considered indispensable to the study of the language. With all these reading materials available for you, Japanese fluency shouldn’t be far from becoming a reality!

There are three of these books, and while I love all three of them, most people won't need to go beyond the first one (Basic). We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. One of the smallest Japanese grammar books out there, this one covers parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, idioms, and even advice on pronunciation. There are even helpful comparisons to English grammar and recordings of answers available on the McGraw-Hill Language Lab app. The list of verbs and their conjugations found in the appendices are particularly helpful for beginners, as is much of the other information therein.

Even more importantly, they know how to relay that complicated information to you in a way that you will understand. Finally, there are a ton of indexes at the end of the book that cover things like pairs of transitive and intransitive verbs, counters, the “ko-so-a-do” and a lot more. And having over 600 pages of information organized into a dictionary format made finding the right ones a piece of cake. It’s a pretty big book and the beginning of it covers a lot of information such as the abbreviations used throughout, lots of grammar terminology, and some aspects of the Japanese language. Just like the previous book, this one presents grammar concepts in dictionary format, accompanied by rich example sentences that will help students understand the necessary knowledge to master intermediate Japanese. The authors do an excellent job of combining complicated linguistic explanations replete with examples of both correct and incorrect sentences.

It’s best suited for intermediate learners but it can also be used as a refresher for advanced learners. I haven’t gone through those yet (although I do own the second one), so I won’t talk too much about them here unless I feel it’s necessary. Apart from that I’d like to ask you have you read or heard of the book “Japanese the Manga Way” its one of many popular Japanese teaching books related to grammar and I would like to know your thoughts on it.

The book is both a good read for an overview of "basic" grammar ("overview" = 600+ pages) and an excellent reference book. What’s more, this book includes a lot of practice sections to allow the reader to test his or her understanding of the lesson. And while you can do these with the help of Japanese learning books, you can be a little bit more specific by reading Japanese grammar books. It's also good for JLPT1 students, as it includes all that useless, uncommon grammar that you have to learn for that test. I might go back through and add some sentences from the book to my SRS, and I plan to read the Intermediate and Advanced books as well.

That way you can look up confusing grammar patterns in the book while you progress through the main learning materials. When it comes to understanding a grammar point you've learned or tried to learn, they're the best, hands down. Studying for the N1 exam and talking with other examinees has made it clear how many people use "guess" when figuring out when to use wa versus ga. Another thing that a lot of people didn’t like was the fact that the book uses romaji for the readings of all words.

The same cannot be said for the mystifying section on viewpoint, which while clarifying the thought behind the mechanics of the various giving/receiving verbs, also offered a bunch of perspective rules, all of which you could break if you were writing fiction in English, and I assume in Japanese as well. All About Particles is a handbook that covers more than 70 commonly used particles as well as less frequently used ones. Anyway, for some of the entries you also get notes from the authors that might explain a nuance to the grammar, or talk about certain situations where there are exceptions.
