During the fight with Serpine in the Sanctuary, Stephanie glimpsed her True name in the Book of Names but could not remember it before the Book of Names was destroyed. Skulduggery destroyed Serpine with the Scepter, breaking the Scepter's power in the process. Afterward, Skulduggery offered to take Stephanie on as his assistant and apprentice because she is a descendant of the Ancients. Stephanie decided to take the name of Valkyrie Cain. Skulduggery Pleasant: Hell Breaks Loose is the prequel set three hundred years before the events of the actual book series. I liked the insight into the Dead Men and some of the surrounding characters (e.g. Corrival Deuce or Sagacious Tome) a lot.

The plot twist, honestly, took me by surprise. I heard something was "odd" about this book beforehand, but I didn't really speculate what it could be. While a proper prequel might have been lovely, the time-travel aspect did not diminish the fun - at least not to me. Skulduggery Pleasant won the Red House Children's Book Award, [40] the Bolton Children's Book Award [41] and the Staffordshire Young Teen Fiction Award. [42] The book was also recommended for confident readers (9+) by the Richard & Judy Children's Book Club in 2007. It also won the Portsmouth Book Awards in 2008, having been selected by school children in Portsmouth, as well as winning Irish book of the decade in 2010. [43] Also, in 2009, it won the Kernow Youth and Grampian Book Awards by a majority vote. It had also been nominated for Young Reader's Choice Awards 2010 in North America and it won Irish Book Awards in 2009 and 2010. Ok. So: I've read the first Skulduggery Pleasant book when I was 12 and have read every book in the series published so far. I love Derek Landy's style of writing, love the Skulduggery Pleasant universe, love the characters, and I'm a massive fan of the original series. But I'm not a huge fan of this. I think this is also the best place to point out the cruel, cruel irony and foreshadowing to Ravel's betrayal:

How to read the Skulduggery Pleasant Books in Order?

In case you were wondering, Dexter's the most honest, Saracen's the most charming, Ravel is the most loyal and you are the most decent." And oh my goodness, Ghastly's mother! She is the mother we all want, I just love their relationship. The series did not prove popular in the US, [48] [49] and the publisher stopped releasing there after the third book. [48] Film adaptation [ edit ] I will say halfway through I DID NOT expect that plot twist, and it was quite out of left field but can why am I not surprised with the way phase 2 was handled. That’s where the disappointment sets in because while I’m all for it, this new direction/pattern is something that hasn’t made me want to re-read the newer books compared to the way I used to want to read the phase one books. We are friends, then, in the future?" Valkyrie struggled to maintain the scowl, but it was a losing battle. "Yes," she said. "We're very close friends." The Villains

Reading Skulduggery Pleasant Books in Chronological Order with short stories:

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. I quite liked this book. But apparently not everyone else did, and i am wondering why. Maybe it's been too long since i read the previous books, but i really enjoyed this book. There was the usual writing and plot twists that i loved. Skulduggery was slightly different, but it just shows character development (in the other books). After this Sister Rapture and Sister Stone are devastated. But THEN we find that Sister Stone is in fact Valkyrie (ik, SURPRISE!!) from the future. And she had some vision that this dude (i still don't remember his name) would change reality or something. My memory is terrible. But future Skulduggery told future Valkyrie to go to the past and kill this dude whose lifeline is attached to the murde

Hell Breaks Loose by Derek Landy | Waterstones

Skulduggery Pleasant is a series of dark fantasy novels written by Irish author Derek Landy. Tom Percival is the series' illustrator. The books revolve around the adventures of fledgling detective Valkyrie Cain and her mentor Skulduggery Pleasant, along with other friends and allies. The central story concerns Valkyrie's struggle to stop evil forces threatening the world and her internal struggle to resist the darkness within. Across a Dark Plain: 1861: (–1) The Dead Men traversed South Dakota on the hunt for their target, Nefarian Serpine.

I felt like I just read an AU fanfic written by the author himself… and while it was quite trippy, I’m not entirely mad? Hella confused and a little bit disappointed but to be very honest, I’m a diehard SP fan so this review … will be way too biased. When it comes to SP, all rationality dies and so do I. He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List. The first novel was published in April 2007. The following novels were released each year afterward, with the exception of the fourth and fifth novels, Dark Days and Mortal Coil, which were both released in 2010. Landy was initially contracted to write three books, with any further books depending on how well the first trilogy sold. The success of the first novels ensured that the deal was extended first to six books and in 2011, HarperCollins signed the deal for the third and final trilogy. [1] The final book in the first series was published in August 2014. The new books in the second series began to be published annually in June 2017. Skulduggery is different in this story, and it is in my opinion very accurate considering what he has been through so very recently. I have always been a big fan of the Skulduggery Pleasant universe and book series and so it's always nice to have new releases following the end of a Phase of the main books even though this wasn't anything incredible or innovative, it did keep me entertained and having a good time whilst I read it.

Hardyment, Christina (20 April 2007). "Books for 8-12s reviewed". The Independent. London. Archived from the original on 21 August 2009.A writer at the height of his powers . . . Whatever your age, read them and enjoy the ride” - Irish Independent This was rather fun. It's basically Ghastly's book and I loved it for that. I really enjoyed revisiting all the deceased characters in 1703 and getting to know Ghastly's mother. Their relationship is so sweet. Until the End– The Faceless Ones have returned to our universe. The bad guys have won. With the end of everything just days away – and no longer able to rely on Valkyrie Cain – Skulduggery must make allies of enemies if he’s going to stand any chance of saving what’s left of the world. And just when things are looking their bleakest, they manage to get even worse, with Omen Darkly suddenly having to step up when his brother, the Chosen One, falls. There’s a lot going on. Most of it is bad. Sorry about that. I am quite sad though that Dexter and Saracen's, how do we say, romantic development happened only in a "what might have been" sense of events. I am glad that all of them didn't die but since all of them but Dexter did in fact die in the end, I'm still really sad.
