The first two movies told a story of a passionate toxic love, before and after. There's really no need for the forced in between where it becomes tedious and boring with basically just a lot of sex and arguments. Just leave him Tessa! Now I get to make money on my own terms with someone I really enjoy hanging out with, which is great because right from the beginning I knew I wanted to spend as much time as possible with this person. A whirlwind romance. A perfect marriage. Hannah Reilly has seized her chance at happiness. Until the day her husband fails to come home… Flash to the present. We have been married almost 20 years. The basic story is that Hannah, a woman who values her independence and avoids commitment due to the failure of her parents' marriage and her mother's subsequent decline, finally meets Mark and marries him in a whirlwind romance and engagement. Cut to several months later, when Hannah goes to meet Mark at the airport when he's expected home from a business trip. He doesn't show up, and this is the catalyst for Hannah to start digging through his slightly mysterious history and uncover all of his deep, dirty secrets. This gripping psychological thriller had me enthralled from start to finish and I thoroughly enjoyed its fast pace, with the twists and turns keeping me on the edge of my chair. I read late into the night to finish it, as I needed to know the outcome! I have no hesitation in recommending this novel highly. I received this book free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Shortly after, I read Whitehouse’s second novel – The Bed I Made, but it would be another four years before she was to publish her third – Before We Met. Much like her first two books, Before We Met immediately enthrals its readers as we meet newly-wed Hannah, waiting for her husband Mark at Heathrow as he fails to return from a business trip in New York. Before We Met did not start off being a good read for me. I thought it was boring and predictable. And as mentioned before, I couldn't ever warm up to Hannah. I almost felt that she was naive and kept blinders on for some obscene reason. She seems to find so much information in an afternoon. What cloud was her head in until now? After I forgave Hannah her shortcomings, I was able to enjoy the story. My wife didn't get quite as wild as yours, but had a somewhat promiscuous phase when she was younger. My wife had been with 14 sexual partners before we met when we were both 22. Now, by some standards, that's not high at all. However, 11 of them came in a little under a year. Two were relationships in high school that lasted around a year, and one was a relationship in college that ended about 3 months before we met. Yes, 11 in 11 months would qualify as promiscuous, but I basically attribute that to the burst of freedom that college can provide. Plus, I wasn't exactly celibate before we met either (7).

Lucie Whitehouse ratchets up the suspense incrementally, to the point where you're not quite sure what to believe either. While this book veers into territory we've seen numerous times before, it's a credit to Whitehouse's storytelling ability that you can't stop reading, you can't stop wondering just where things will go. Are there valid excuses for what Hannah finds out? Has Mark been trying to protect her, or simply himself? For those that say it doesn’t matter about someone’s past I would agree only if that person’s past emotional hurts doesn’t enter your marriage. In my case it did and I suffered many years because of it. If I had known about my wife’s emotional state at the time we met I would have at least put the wedding on hold and insist that she get counseling but I was not given that chance. No one should judge anyone but that has nothing to do with just being honest in the beginning about who you really are.

Before We Met is billed as a psychological thriller. Hannah and Mark have been married all of 5 months after a 3 month courtship (as it were) and amazingly, Hannah discovers that she doesn't actually know anything about her new husband other than the stories he's told her. Over the course of a weekend, she discovers that he's been lying to her all this time (5 whole months!). Learning the structure and formula of the past perfect tense will help you in a way that you don’t expect. Obviously, anything becomes easy once you know what it is, right? So, here is the formula of the past perfect tense. Subject + had + past participle + the rest of the sentence Hannah begins to dig into her husband’s life, uncovering revelations that throw into doubt everything she has ever believed about him. As her investigation leads her away from their fairytale romance into a place of violence and fear she must decide whether the secrets Mark has been keeping are designed to protect him or protect her… About Lucie Whitehouse
