Summary: Practical Magic was the first book published in the Practical Magic series, and it dives deep into the characters of two particular Owens women, orphaned sisters Gillian and Sally. Their family has been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their small Massachusetts for generations, and their quirky aunts encourage witchery. Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Sally is dark-haired, serious, responsible, and tempered by tragedy. Gillian has bright red hair and is a devil-may-care, impulsive, party girl who never wants to be tied down. Summary: Set in the 1600s, Magic Lessons begins the story of the Owens women. After Maria Owens was abandoned in a snowy field in England as a baby, she came under the care of Hannah Owens, who teaches her the “Nameless Arts.” Scenery Porn: Combined with Big Fancy House. The Owen women live in a gorgeous Victorian house near the water. She is not worth his devotion. She wishes he would evaporate into thin air. Maybe then she wouldn’t have this feeling deep inside, a feeling she can deny all she wants, but that won’t stop it from being desire. Hot Witch: Sally, in spite of herself. Gillian, quite deliberately. (The Aunts were apparently quite the lookers in their days, as well.)

Caralyn Kozlowski as Regina Owens, Sally and Gillian's mother, who committed suicide after losing her husband to the Owens curse. A love spell is also used to encourage Sally to fall in love with Michael (though the aunts never knew it would go as far as it did).

Superpowerful Genetics: Witchcraft follows bloodlines. During the climax however, other women in the town help them perform a spell so magic doesn't seem to be 100% genetic. My thoughts: While I enjoyed this one, it didn’t grab me personally as much as Practical Magic (which I read first) did. I think it’s because it feels more plot-driven, and I prefer character-driven books. After all I’ve done for you is lodged somewhere in her brain, and far worse, it’s in her heart as well.
