Scotchgard’s performance is very similar to that of the Kiwi Camp Dry. Camp Dry is an incredible waterproofing spray but is better suited to camping and hiking gear that already has some water resistance designed in. Scotchgard, by contrast, tends to be a much better waterproof spray for general outdoor fabrics like patio furniture and canvas covers. Atsko Silicone Water Guard vs Scotchgard Revivex wins this one as it’s virtually odorless. Nikwax isn’t exactly stinky, but it does have a mild vinegary smell to it. It doesn’t linger for long after an application, though, and it’s generally best to re-proof gear in a well-ventilated space anyway. (And even though Revivex has no odor, it doesn’t mean it isn’t firing nano-particles into the area which many aerosol dispensers do.). Leather is different from other materials. It’s very porous, so it won’t ever be completely waterproof, but you can protect it from water by waterproofing it yourself. Apply a waterproofing spray like normal, or use the waxing method we talked about for leather boots. How to Waterproof Boots & Shoes

These products can help extend the shelf life before the next application of a permanent water repellent. If you’re concerned about changes to an item’s color or texture, spot-testing on a small area is always a good idea. There are five size options, small (15-25 L) to XXL (70-90 L). Buyers also receive a bonus velvet pouch, useful for storing smaller items. This is an aerosol product, and you must take extra care not to breathe in the vapors when spraying (the bottle even recommends you don’t allow children or pets near the spray or wet items). There is also a strong chemical smell. We tested in a well-ventilated breezeway and still had to step away for a few minutes after spraying the boots each time. The scent did linger longer than on some of the other products—even after the recommended 24 to 48 hours of drying time—but it eventually faded with time and wear. Especially if you are applying to a tent, for example, you’ll want to allow some time for the item to air out before use. Set up the tent and splash down the rainfly with clean water (on the off chance that you just washed your tent, you don’t need to sit tight for it to dry before applying another DWR covering.)

If you live somewhere with consistently rainy weather, maybe using a spray or wax can prevent weather damage on the outside while a liner stops moisture leaks. But no one likes soaked shoes, purses, or any other type of leather goods, and too much water can eventually damage these items, causing that dreaded drying out or molding. Chamberlain’s Leather Milk Water Protectant No. 3 bills itself as a protectant—creating a water-resistant layer that stops the material from absorbing liquid—and a conditioner. Old gear can be given new life by this affordable and simple-to-use waterproofing spray. And unlike many other waterproofing sprays, the fact it’s water-based rather than silicone-based is big plus on the eco front. Revivex vs. Nikwax

Even with its lower price, this is one of the most effective waterproofing sprays we tested, and no amount of water applied to the boots used for testing was enough to penetrate its shield, yet the boots felt as breathable as before. It didn’t take much product for a thorough double coating—recommended about four hours apart—making this an even more cost-effective product. An ideal down detergent improves the fluffiness of the down insulation and prolongs the water resistance of the treated down. Remember to follow the instructions on the care label. You can also put some light tennis balls in the dryer to loosen up the down clumps in the affected areas. #6. shoe leather and fabric impregnationSince this thing is environmental - friendly and water-based, its ensured and innocuous to the environment. Revivex comes in an aerosol can whereas Nikwax prefers a trigger spray mechanism. Each to their own (and I can absolutely see how an aerosol is marginally more convenient) but I definitely prefer the manual trigger spray approach. I’m not keen on the extra resources required for an aerosol delivery (it seems wasteful and, of course, you have to pay for it). And I’ve always found aerosols seem to run out of propellant before the can is empty. Finally, make sure you have completely sprayed all areas of your fabric with the new water repellent waterproofing spray after hanging the garment to dry. You can also dry the garment in the dryer if the material allows it. My name is Dr. Bommel, and I am a retired scientist at Nano-Care Deutschland AG. The perfect waterproofing product makes your gear feel like new—waterproof and breathable again, with no negative changes to the material. That’s precisely what Grangers Performance Repel Plus, a non-aerosol spray from the British brand, did for an older pair of rain pants that were wetting out. In fact, the waterproofing on these pants was better after applying this spray than it was before. With one can, nylon materials gain 60 sq. ft. of water resistance or 20 sq. ft. on heavier fabrics. OUR TOP PICK

The Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On, a non-aerosol product, was designed to help your waterproof and breathable outdoor wet-weather gear, including Gore-Tex items, return to a water-resistant state. That’s certainly what it did for our tester's favorite rain shell, which before testing was wetting out—absorbing water in patches, on the sleeves especially, and becoming heavy and clammy—on rainy hikes.

Thanks to its crystal-clear formula that is completely silicone-free, the Rust-Oleum NeverWet waterproof spray is an excellent choice for all sensitive fabrics. We particularly like that it won’t change the appearance or feel of your items in any way. Besides just water, this top rated water repellent spray is equally great against ice and mud too.

One container is enough to waterproof a whole tent. Viable with polyurethane covering, thus you rapidly fix any current waterproofing that is blurring or chipping endlessly. With a froth tool brush tip, it is not difficult to extend the sealer out into a far layer that shields everything from water. Another issue people point out is the sharp odor that some products have. This is more common for silicone-based sprays than for those that are water-based. Still, the best water repellent spray for fabric shouldn’t have any odors once it’s completely dry. Star Brite’s Waterproofing Spray is a solid all-around option for a diverse range of outdoor gear. It has waterproofing, UV, and stain protection that we particularly liked on tents. We found it to be odorless, and it didn’t change the feel or look of the material, as the brand suggests.
