Ugh what a let down. Had so much potential and I thought a great build up. The protagonist was kind of a selfish asshat, but she was tolerable because Malphas was so endearing. I was even able to tolerate the fated mates trope because of the intriguing world building and mystery. I’ll just say that I would have rated this much higher and been a lot more generous with praise if the author didn’t write a nonexistent and unsatisfying climax. Also, she never earned him. She didn’t deserve him and no last minute “rescues” will make up for her being a disappointing human being. I really should’ve known better than to play around with that old book of spells…How was I supposed to know that the incantations scrawled inside of it worked? That the first one I read would open a portal into a demon plane — or that the next one...
