About this deal

Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. But with Born to be Mild you don’t need to have any concerns about not enjoying it. Yes, it’s not cover to cover humour like Very British Problems posts or books, but it gives a wonderful insight into what drives those outputs. And if you’ve never really stopped to think about what the impact of various mental problems can be, this book will be a good eye-opener without getting too heavy. As I have posted about before, there is a responsibility for all of us who write and teach to include discussions on disabilities, but there is also a responsibility on all of us to then read and learn about them too. A funny, life-affirming memoir from the creator of social media empire Very British Problems, about how to start again when everything's gone wrong.

So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. I really can’t disagree with that. I get frustrated with the pressure to be best and number one, whether it be personally or when one discusses sports teams, pop acts, or even countries. This is something that I have discussed before in relation to my review of The Sportsworld of the Hanshin Tigers by William W. Kelly and I will also be discussing in my book Frankie Fans Say. When driving on the road, I don’t want to be the fastest – I’m happy to be going at my pace (letting the fastest, hopefully, get stopped by the police before me) and just get to my destination. Yes, it’s nice to get recognition for what you do and be seen as an expert – but it doesn’t have to be about being seen as the best. The push to be best and do wild things may drive many people and whole economies, but it also creates ridiculous pressures and, ultimately, probably leads to huge inequalities, social problems, health problems and environmental damage. Again I become trapped by myself and this time, completely unchaperoned, I can’t resist the urge to drink.” Not bad at all. It is very British. I have 77 notes and highlights in this ebook, most of them very British expressions. At times, even my inner voice changed to a very British accent (sounded mostly like the voices of John Oliver, Tom Hiddleston, and Hugh Laurie - in turns, not at the same time, I have no idea what that would sound like). At other times it changed to whatever accent the author was doing in the scene.

Best quote from the book....when he decided to become flexitarian!! ( veggie, but with the option to add meat or dairy whenever he feels like it!!) Although the book is laden throughout with Rob’s characteristic humour and, erm, funniness, he’s also candid about his own problems. He’s living with his parents in Godmanchester after the ending of his marriage. He has some health issues, exacerbated at times by a worrying and wholly unfunny misuse of alcohol. Seeking connections with others is therefore not just some idle conceit or project: She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. This book is a wonderful blend of inspiring, humorous, relatable and a teeny bit depressing which in my opinion makes it great!

Born to be Mild: Adventures for the Anxious by Rob Temple

Rob Temple. Double oh mild. The man behind the fantastically funny and very truthful Very British Problems (a book I cherish and refer to often). Because Born to be Mild is a book that is honest about anxiety, yet positive, uplifting and ultimately life-affirming and relevant. A funny, life-affirming memoir from the creator of social media empire Very British Problems, about how to start again when everything’s gone wrong. Anxiety won't be completely going away, since there is no cure for VBP, but makes it much more enjoyable (which I never thought a condition could be?), and I can go to sleep with a smile (confused and still a bit guilty, but what a relief, don't you agree).I’m not one for memoirs, I find them stuffy, boring, and cash grab-y (just my opinion), but this was lighthearted and sincere, hilarious and deep, silly yet profound. As someone who struggles with anxiety, and especially with setting myself unrealistic goals, I felt seen by this memoir, and I related so much with Ron’s adventures for the mild. Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. It’s a shame to start it in a way, because once you’ve started it’ll soon be done, and when it’s done, it’s done. I’d like it to be in a state of permanent potential.

Born to be Mild by Rob Temple | Hachette UK

Arriving to the miserably decadent moment of self-realisation when 'we both know you've developped a certain addiction', but you can't help being less apologetic than expected and fight the urge of being terribly sorry about it.. Rob decides to take on lots of new experiences, which he relays to the reader. He also takes us through various points in his life where his anxiety and ultra mild-mannered-ness has impacted his life, and how he, therefore, interacts with others. His success with Very British Problems, how this led him to work from home permanently and that in turn resulted in a persistent and, at times, debilitating feeling of anxiety for Rob. Urkel: Big guy, you okay? Carl: No, I'm not, Steve. I want revenge. Urkel: But you can't. You're a cop. Carl: But I'm a father first. Urkel: Wait, wait, wait. I said wait. Carl: What is it? Urkel: Now you're upset and with good reason, but if you go out Dragon bashing, they'll scream police brutality and you'll lose your job. Then there’s the Very British Problems Daily Telegraph column, the four book volumes and counting, the board game, cups, greetings cards, and not forgetting the TV programme. A social media empire that Rob runs – horizontally – all from the comfort of his sofa. Rob Temple winning at life? Yes, but if only everything was that straightforward for him, as he explains in this book’s introduction: A handful of years ago I moved with my wife to a house on a quiet street in a quiet town and lay quietly in a room for a long time. There is no suggestion by the book’s end that Rob’s numerous new experiences have led him to some kind of blinding moment of self-enlightenment. The struggle is real and takes place on a daily basis. The point is to keep trying, to keep mixing things up, to trust, at least partly and sometimes, in the goodness and generosity of others. As someone who has experienced crippling social anxiety, and has spent much time in Peterborough, Born to be Mild resonated with me on every level. If you have an anxious mind and want to find a kindred soul, and to reflect upon how our lives (as humdrum and routine or exciting and varied) are moulded by our social environment, our mental health, our persistent anxiety, then read this book. I used to love an adventure, but when I hit my thirties I started to become afraid of the world, until I was too frightened to even go outside at all . . . it was just me, my phone and my social media feeds. Doesn't sound too healthy, does it? It wasn't.'
