The mushrooms!! Him and the mushrooms!! Oh, and the midges! 😂 😂 Even after watching all the episodes of Men in Kilts, I never saw any hint of Sam’s little obsession with the mushrooms! The midges – most definitely! But now, I’ll never think the same of the mushrooms. I am now well aware that they are always watching us. 😂 🍄

The moment when Heughan receives the call from his agent that he got the part and heard, “You’re Jamie Fraser,” you can’t but help feel the emotion in that one little life changing sentence. Heughan immediately hung up and then screamed for joy in a parking lot. This story has two sections of colour photos; one, is of Sam throughout his childhood and the other is pictures he took while hiking through the Highland trail. These are exactly right for this story, and they encapsulate both the author and the setting. Heughan breaks down the book in sections rather than chapters, each section associated with one day of his walking journey (for a total of seven, not including the foreword, prologue and epilogue). That adversity is what eventually inspired his own charity organization, My Peak Challenge, which inspires others to live a healthy lifestyle, and has raised money for a range of causes from hunger relief to cancer research. His acting journey wasn’t an easy one. So many slammed doors and disappointments, but he managed to not lose heart. He talked about times when his account was in the negative and he honestly didn’t know what he would do. He even became a bar tender and talked about the embarrassment of what it was like serving your peers (fellow actors) umm, Richard Madden. Very humbling. Some of the best parts of the book are when he runs into random strangers in the wild and then they suffer, er… enjoy, walking together through miserable weather elements, shin splints and aching Achilles. A traveler named Graeme recognizes Heughan right away. He says, “I saw your movie, it was shit.” And a beautiful friendship was born.

What a gift Sam has given himself and his fans. I loved the flow of the book going from present situation to reflecting on the past. Waypoints is a deeply personal journey that reveals as much to Sam about himself as it does to his readers.

His trust and abandonment issues due to his father not being in his life. He was very candid about how it effects his friendships and romantic relationships. Trust is huge for him so I totally get that. I would like to think of this as a beautiful gift that we have been given, though I am pretty sure this was more for himself than his fans. Either way, I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to join in on Sam's journey. I feel like I gained some perspective that could benefit my own life and I didn't even have to leave my couch. Thanks for putting in the hard work Sam. Although Heughan begins his journey walking alone, the most humorous moments in the book are when you can tell he misses human interaction. He ends up befriending mushrooms. Yes, mushrooms. Fungi, to be exact. You know how Tom Hanks befriended a volleyball named Wilson in Castaway? Same sitch. Heughan talked to the mushrooms, told them a few dad jokes, and even took several selfies with them. I love truffles, so I support the fact that this man talked to mushrooms. Period. I will say nothing more on the matter. Oh wait, one more thing. Heughan’s mushroom friends have led to fans constantly tweeting mushrooms at him. Hopefully, they’ll send actual truffles to him, and then it will have all been worth it.
