After my late grandpa used a primitive balance serving tray for years and seeing how much it helped him I knew I had to develop and improve the design to help others the way it helped him. I began work on Tipsi Tray™, the Single Handed serving tray designed to make life easier and safer in the home and hospitality industry.’ The 14-inch tray has enough surface area for a dinner plate and a drink or up to 8-9 glasses or mugs. I’m hoping to follow in the footsteps of Trunki which appeared in the Den in 2006. Theo pulled apart a Trunki travel case but despite this they have gone on to sell more than 2.8 million suitcases and is now a global success. The Tipsi Tray is incredibly level and stable, meaning you will never spill your cuppa again! The Tipsi Tray works on the simple physics principle of centripetal force. When the tray is held in the hand, items on the Tipsi Tray sit far below the centre of rotation.

Dragons’ Den: In which a Dragon is vanquished – Season 18

The long handle is a key feature which makes the two trays appear very similar. Both trays allow for the plate / tray to be used on its own as a platter for serving food as the hook and arms are removable. Perhaps one of the main differences between the trays is the modern design work that comes with the Tipsi Tray. The Tipsi Tray features raised edges and a non-skid surface for keeping dishes securely in place to minimise spills and messes. The strong, but non plastic, rubber makes it almost impossible to spill anything over on the tray. By choosing rubber, it also makes the Tipsi Tray dishwasher friendly unlike the Turkish counterpart (a must have for the average 21st century user!) Again, using this one-handed tray means your other hand is free to open doors and walk through the house with ease to the dining room, lounge or garden to serve your guests. A lifetime of safe use: this unique one-hand tray is made with of very strong, food-grade stainless steel. It has a rubberised coating to prevent anything on the tray moving while in motion.Southampton entrepreneur Robert Simpson appeared on Dragon’s Den to try and secure investment for the Tipsi Tray in 2021. The prototype was built by his grandfather Andrew Townson in Yorkshire in the early 1980s, to help him carry food and drink around his house. From January 2023, Disability Horizons received the very first batch of the new Topple Trays, a brand new and improved design of the Tipsi Tray, which is much smaller, lightweight and portable. Tipsi Tray 14″ weighs 1.5kg so will not be suitable for everyone. If you require a lighter tray, consider the 11″ version.

The handle is also completely removable, allowing easy storage and cleaning. The Tipsi Tray is also dishwasher safe. With the Tipsi Tray being a popular product and selling fast, we, fortunately, have a couple of alternative one-handed trays that could benefit your independence too. The New Topple Tray The Tipsi Tray, which has a long, curved handle which means it can be used one-handed and remain incredibly stable without spilling food or drink, was designed and a prototype built by his grandfather Andrew Townson in Yorkshire in the early 1980s.A stand-off ensued. Suleyman and Davies, the couple’s investment hopefuls, mulled over the options. Suddenly, Suleyman made his move – and it was a whopper. In an unorthodox offer, he proposed all the money in return for a 90 per cent stake, essentially wanting to run the company himself. This proposal would give the couple a 5 per cent royalty on future sales. Personally, I would have preferred the use of silicone in place of rubber. Silicone has a high friction ratio, possibly better than rubber. Plus, silicone will withstand high temperatures better than rubber as well withstanding wear-and-tear. You might look at this and keep the cost difference in mind. The retail market isn’t what it was when Dragon’s Den was more popular and having ‘doors opened’ is no longer the priority for brands going on the show. The tray is designed in a tripodal fashion to enable ease of use whilst carrying items on it. It uses centripetal force which helps to reduce the chance of spilling any food and drink being carried. The Tipsi Tray was designed to make life easier for anyone who would benefit from using a tray one handed. The unique design allows easy use for those with balance issues, tremors and disabilities that make carrying a standard, traditional two-handed tray a lot more difficult, or even dangerous. It also works well for waiting staff in busy bars or cafes.

CARRY DRINKS WITH A SINGLE HAND | Unlike traditional 2 handed serving trays, the Tipsi Tray™ can be carried with a single hand allowing you to carry up to 9 drinks while holding a bannister, opening a door or using a walking cane. All whilst staying safe. Everyone can benefit from the Tipsi Tray™ particularly older people, disabled people or those who work in bars, restaurants and the hospitality industry. The largest in the circular range of Tipsi Trays - The 14 Inch circular Tipsi Tray™ is perfect for bigger loads and more drinks. With enough room for up to 9 drinks or a regular plate and a drink, the rectangular version is perfect for the larger family at home or cafe/bar setting. You would be forgiven, watching this episode, for thinking all British entrepreneurial spirit had been stamped on by scaly claws as the following two contestants – a husband and wife duo bringing dogs to weddings and a father-and-daughter sales team offering inflatable life vests for sports – left the Den empty handed. If you're after something more modern, then our metal serving trays are here to provide you with glamour and luxury your kitchen needs. Our stunning metal trays are truly versatile and practical; allowing you to wow your guests at elegant dinner parties or impress your friends and family at your summer BBQs. Whatever the event or occasion, you can count on us to help you put everything together with impeccable style.Tipsi Tray ensures items remain steady and level – excellent alternative to traditional trays for people with conditions which cause shaky hands or tremors, such as Parkinson’s disease The Dragons appreciated Simpson’s ability to wangle a direct-as-vendor deal with a shopping network. But the praise came with a rude awakening: without a patent, Simpson’s design was left with no barrier to entry. Even the factories manufacturing Simpson’s products could “see you having a bit of success, easily replicate the item and massively undercut you on price,” Davies levelled with him. When the non-slip tray is moved around, the contents remain still on the tray as the centripetal force overcomes the force of gravity. The Tipsi Tray is designed to make life easier for anyone who would benefit from using a tray one-handed. The unique design allows easy use for those with balance problems, dexterity issues and disabilities – such as Parkinson’s disease or cerebral palsy – which makes carrying a standard, traditional two-handed tray a lot more difficult, or even dangerous. Robert exclusively shared with us how the Tipsi Tray developed into the modern, versatile device it is today:
