He also sows wide margins of wildflowers, to replicate the way fields had existed in the days before mechanical reaping and sowing, and lays out tables of seed to entice the birds. He uses no chemicals on his fields, and when he reaps he bundles the wheat into old-fashioned sheaves. Traditional ploughland is disappearing. Seven cornfield flowers have become extinct in the last twenty years. Once abundant, the corn bunting and the lapwing are on the Red List. The corncrake is all but extinct in England. The folklore around it is that it does literally 'speed you well', and travellers in years gone by would sew it into the linings of their coats as a charm for their journey. (Ian Critchley Sunday Times) It is interesting to learn about the search for various types of traditional farming equipment, repaired and used at each stage of the wheat growing process, from ploughing the field, sowing the seeds, harvesting, transporting and storing the harvest at the end of the season. It is good to know that quality tools built to last a lifetime are still around and will find a place in our lives again. Went to The Village for a 2 night stay and decided to visit the Running Hare for my wife’s favourite meal “A Carvery” when were out . Very surprised to find 2 carverys for a tenner! What a bargain! This price for a medium but for an extra few pounds there is a large carvery on offer.His latest work, La Vie, (2023) describes his experience in 'la France profonde'.
