Description

Tell students that they can use the opinions from the Places People Plant Trees anchor chart and the reasons from the Reasons to Plant a Tree anchor chart to play a matching game. During Work Time A, prompt students to share the questions they can ask when they don't understand. If needed, review the questions, then model pausing and reconsidering a phrase that may be confusing. In Work Time B, the information from the Places People Plant Trees anchor chart and the Reasons to Plant a Tree anchor chart is used to practice forming opinions and supporting the opinions with reasons through the Matching Opinions with Reasons game, and then eventually in writing for the Unit 2 Assessment, Part II in Lesson 11.

MAMA MITI | Kirkus Reviews

You’re never too young to understand money - the root of so many issues in our world, and get to grips with the world it has created for us all. Multiple Means of Representation (MMR): Recall that some students may benefit from having an individual copy of the poem to follow along in near-point as it is read aloud. Support transfer of learning by offering multiple representations of the poem. Consider providing an annotated or illustrated copy of the poem for students as support for information-processing strategy development and comprehension.Soon investors started to drop out. The park was maintained and is providing space to trees, animals and humans alike. This action however brought her the ire of then Kenyan strongman Daniel Arap Moi. Police brutally beat the protesting women and Wangari was imprisoned for some time. Yet she and her movement persisted and the authoritarian government got voted out and Wangari Maathai was made a part of the newly formed government as assitant minister of environment. SL.K.1a : Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion). After reading the stories, talk about cause and effect. Have the students make a chart and fill in the missing causes and effects. Mama Miti | Book by Donna Jo Napoli, Kadir Nelson | Official

While serving on the National Council of Women of Kenya, she became dedicated to helping with the struggles of women in rural Kenya. Noticing how the rapid environmental degradation was affecting women's lives, she encouraged them to plant trees to ensure future supplies of firewood and to protect water sources and crops. To that end, she founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, which led to the planting of more than thirty million trees. Wangari realizes that she needs more support, and begins to travel the world to spread her message.SL.K.4 : Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail. Mama Miti is the story of a woman who worked to change her country one tree at a time. Napoli tells the story of Wangari Maathai as if she was a wise elder. While this works within the story, the fact that she is a well educated woman with a PhD might have been worked into the story to emphasize the importance of education imo. The writing is lyrical. The forests are, as well a vital component of the livelihood of rural communities, providing them with firewood, food sources and, as mentioned, water. Much of the labour surrounding water and firewood is done by women in these communites. Therefore it was a logical step for Wangari Maathai to connect these issues. To protect the trees meant protecting the livelihhod of these women. To campaign for womens rights meant to protect their environment. Display the mountain scene sketch and using a total participation technique, invite responses from the group: Invite the reasons to move and stand next to a place that makes sense ("have trunks and limbs to climb" makes sense with "playground" but not "beach"; however, "makes shade" is a reason that could go with either place, and that's okay!).
