Polly was a realistic character: full of flaws, yet incredibly likeable and relatable. The rest of the characters reflected the town from where they came; unique, whimsical, and almost fairy tale in their quality. Sure...Polly had problems and character flaws. Sometimes she tried too much to help people. She cared too much or showed too much forgiveness...honestly. A quiet seaside resort. An abandoned shop. A small flat. This is what awaits Polly Waterford when she arrives at the Cornish coast, fleeing a ruined relationship. However, I pludged into this story because of two reasons: firstly, I wanted to read something about Christmas, secondly, the setting of this book is Cornwall, the place where I spent an amazing week with my British friend in summer 2019. This is the third book of the series but it's not obligatory to read the first books to understand the events in the third one. Then, the end. Well the happy end was okay, but not nearly cute enough. At all. And before the final happy end, of course there had to be some total, life-threatening drama. Which had to do with the sea, just as in the first part. Okay, they live on a tiny island, so heavy storms and huge waves and whatnot are probably most likely, but still. And after that Polly is the most wonderful heroine of all time, blah, blah, blah. How could it have been any different?

I don't want to say too much about the actual story because it could only litter the review with spoilers but I will say that at least one character from the first book dies. Oh, yes... the author's pulling no punches with this one. I loved all of the scenes where she actually baked the bread and thought about bread - it was fun to learn about all the different types and what you need to do to make them. She used to say in old tin miners cottages near Polperro as a child and the days spent at Polperro beach still bring happy and vivid memories which goes to show that the beaches which feature heavily in her books as a whole have a real sense of place over time. Someone had made a gigantic star out of cardboard bedpans. It was kind of revolting and charming at the same time.

I enjoyed the humor and romance Jenny Colgan brings out in the novel, and I also appreciated the varying voices of her characters as they struggled with some rather complicated moral and just plain emotional issues. People make some pretty stupid choices--or even choices we don't agree with. When it's a friend or someone you love, how do you react? Do you stand by them? Take a superior moral stand? Straddle both? Especially when so much is at stake. I very rarely read contemporary romance novels, and I don't think I've ever read a Christmas book. My book bestie sent me this book for a Xmas book exchange this year, and since I'm on a beach vacation, I thought I'd give it a go. This is the third book in the Little Beach Street Bakery trilogy by Jenny Colgan. It can be read as a stand alone with no confusion but it's such a good series that I think you need to read them all! Having been a huge fan of all of Jenny Colgan’s books so far, I couldn’t wait to sit down and get started on her latest release – Summer At Little Beach Street Bakery!

After reading Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery, book three in the Little Beach Street Bakery series did I just have to read the first book because I found the one I read marvelous. As with most of these novels, we start with a bright, but somehow-stilted heroine, who is undergoing quite the personal upset. Then, she realizes that she has to find herself and what makes her happy. Enter the small, charming, seaside town and a conglomeration of quirky, fantastical characters.When Polly’s long-term relationship comes crashing down and with it the business they’ve built together, she’s left to start over completely from scratch. With so few options available to her, she agrees to rent a run-down flat with a leaky roof on the island of Polbearne. She finds solace in utilizing her baking skills and filling the air of the island with the enticing smell of freshly baked bread. Note: I realize the above quote isn't consistent with how light I made the book sound but this quote stood out to me. I love the ocean and find it very therapeutic. I've experienced this quote first-hand and I marked it immediately. It's Christmas in the Cornish coastal village of Mount Polbearne - a time for family, friends and feasting. Hoover is one of the freshest voices in new-adult fiction, and her latest resonates with true emotion, unforgettable characters and just the right amount of sexual tension.

Bread is FAR harder to bake than Polly makes it sound like just so you know! I didn’t actually attempt any of the recipes included in the story (Cheese Straws, Sweetcorn Fritters, Cinnamon Rolls, Focaccia, and my favorite: Shortbread) but I’m determined to try again. Someday.That was (quite possibly) the worst American accent on an audiobook that I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. It's often the blurbs that convince me to read a book, and it was the last paragraph of the above one that especially captured my attention. As a result, I had a built in expectation of what was coming as I read. By the time I reached the end, I wondered if maybe I missed something. There was a big storm. And it did cause a lot of havoc. However, events didn't play out quite the way the blurb suggests . . .
