I used the same technique, but I did not get the same result! It’s not a bad thing, but it wasn’t what I envisioned. Let me show you the difference with the two pieces side by side: After you have finished opening the grain, make sure you wear rubber gloves and use ultra-fine Liberon steel wool (0000) to apply the Liberon Liming wax. Work the liming wax into the grain using circular motions and always finish in the direction of the grain. Then using a clean cotton cloth buff off the excess in the direction of the grain. What is Liming Wax and How To Use It - Real Milk Paint

This week I showed you my faux Restoration Hardware Console Table. I used a combo of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Coco and a homemade Liming Wax to achieve the weathered oak look I was going for.

Tip: I recommend adding a water-based poly layer between the contrasting if you use white paint for the cerused pattern. The reason is to keep anything from bleeding into the white. Keep the contrasting and poly layer thin so it doesn’t fill in the grain. Step 4: The Cerusing Technique You can choose to apply one or several coats of stain, depending on how dark you want the color to be. The darker the stain layer, the bolder the contrast will look when you apply the liming wax.

A smooth white tinted paste wax, formulated to produce a white grained finish in open grained timbers. Particularly effective on oak and similar timbers. It is most effective when applied directly onto the bare wood giving the deep white colouring, but for an even effect it can be applied onto stained and sealed surfaces. Some woods will benefit from opening the grain with a wire brush. Liming Wax can be overcoated with Clear Briwax for a more durable finish. If you want to add another layer of protection to your lime waxed pinewood, you can also add a light, clear finish to the pinewood. This step is important, especially if you are planning to use the wood outside, since the sealant or varnish will protect the wood against the elements. Tip: If you already have very pronounced wood grain, such as oak, you can skip the wire brush step. This step is done to remove a bit of the softer areas of the grain and works best on tight grained wood. Oak that has dried out usually already has a recessed grain. Step 3: Apply a Finish The first, and easiest, is using a liming wax, which is basically just a white furniture wax. This is the liming wax brand I most use. You use it a lot like a furniture wax, where you apply a paint and then buff the furniture wax into the grain pattern. We used some timber offcuts of the doors as test pieces to try out different finishes. You may decide to dye or stain the wood before applying the lime wax, or to add pigment to the liming wax. If you haven’t got any offcuts, test on an area that doesn’t show in the first instance. 4. Apply liming wax to clean wood

Once all the old finish has been removed, it is important to neutralise the wood to remove any excess residue left behind from the stripper as this can cause reactions in the newly applied finish. To do this, use Liberon Wax and Polish Remover with a clean cloth and wipe over the entire piece in the direction of the grain. Once this is dry, remove any blemishes using a sanding pad or paper, again in the direction of the grain. Use Liberon Wax and Polish remover to neutralise the wood This shows the residue removed after neutralising Work the liming wax into the grain of the wood with Liberon Ultra fine Steel Wool (0000) or a lint-free cotton cloth and wipe over with a clean cloth to remove excess. Allow to dry for 3 minutes. Know you know how to lime wood, why not get started on the long-awaited project? More decorating how tos: Raising the grain is an additional step that helps the wood absorb the liming wax effectively. This process involves raising the wood fibers by making them stand up, helping the wood absorb the liming wax later on.

Take a cloth and rub hard to remove most of the excess lime wax lying on the surface. Keep changing the face of the rag as it becomes clogged with wax. At this point – to make the job less strenuous – we used various scouring pads along with toweling rags. A wad of hessian rubbed across the grain proved effective too. 6. Rub on fine paste wax The application of the stripper also affects how uniform the stripping will be. Apply Citristrip evenly and in the same direction, with the grain. This technique, however, works very well with many species including mahogany or cherry. In fact, I prefer it on species like this maple table because they have a more delicate grain pattern. However, I don’t recommend this technique on pine or burled wood. Since pine is a softwood with a closed grain, the liming wax may not work as well on pinewood. The liming wax may wash out the pine’s grains altogether, making the layer of liming wax look dull and messy, which defeats the purpose of the liming wax altogether.

As we have mentioned, liming wax works best on exposed, bare wood, which is why any wood that has been painted or sealed with varnish or other sealants won’t be able to benefit from liming wax. In these cases, you will often need to strip the existing finish to expose the wood, sand it down, and raise the grain before applying the liming wax. Raising the grain is also a useful step when you want to stain pinewood and use liming wax with pine. This extra step will help the grains catch the liming wax better when the wax is applied, which will allow the natural grain to shine through the layer of liming wax. Then take just a spoonful of paint. You don’t need an equal amount of paint otherwise your Liming Wax will be too concentrated. Mix the two together and presto change, you now have Liming Wax. This technique utilizes paint to create the cerusing technique. It is different from using liming wax because the table can be sealed with a clear coat that is hard and durable. Step 1: Prep the wood surface Remember, the goal is to open the grain without damaging the wood, so be gentle when you sand, especially when using a wire brush or coarse sandpaper. Achieving the best possible result with liming wax requires careful attention to these details. Where to Buy Real Milk Paint’s High-Quality Finishing WaxesAllow a few days to dry before adding the final topcoat. This is to allow any outgassing to happen and the paint layers to harden. Liming wax is a wax that is tinted white. It’s one of the easiest way to achieve a white washed effect.
