Description

The Honor 50 boasts a Snapdragon 778G chipset, which is one of the more powerful mid-range processors you’ll find in a smartphone. Still, this chipset can’t hold a candle to processors from the Snapdragon 800 series. Charging is done at 66W, which is fairly fast for a mid-range phone, though certainly not the speediest. At that speed it took roughly 40 minutes to power up the device to full. The rear main camera is a 108MP main camera. High resolution photography can be experienced in “HIGH-RES” mode. Multi-video resolution is 1080p. Video resolution is up to 4K. When it was time for the Snapdragon 778G to strut its stuff, I wasn’t left disappointed. Daily tasks, from playing videos and music to browsing various social media apps, were carried out without any lag whatsoever, and the Honor 50 also seemed to cope very well with playing mobile games. What’s more, you’ll also get 5G mobile data where available, which is far from a guarantee with devices at this price point. Test Type Of course, whether or not it appeals will be down to personal preference, although at least in this instance there’s a clear plastic case provided in the box to protect the device’s surface from smears.

Honor 50 Review: A lot to like | Trusted Reviews

Along with the main sensor, Honor also includes an ultra-wide lens for added versatility. While it’s good to have, allowing you to capture far more with its 120-degree field view, it’s a significant downgrade in terms of resolution (at just 8 megapixels) – and I also experienced notable shutter lag with this lens. Taken with the Honor 50’s ultra-wide sensor The maximum temperature on the upper side is 34.7 °C / 94 F, compared to the average of 35 °C / 95 F, ranging from 21.9 to 56 °C for the class Smartphone. The main snapper has a 108MP sensor, and takes photos using 9-to-1 pixel binning, which means the camera combines every nine pixels into one giant one. This enables the sensor to ‘see’ lots of light, and produces final images that are 12MP.There’s also a 2-megapixel macro sensor on board. While it doesn’t do too bad a job of extreme close-up photography (the ideal distance from the subject being just 4cm), it will rarely be useful on a day-to-day basis. Taken with the Honor 50’s macro sensor The rear main camera is a 108MP camera. The front camera is a 32MP camera. The device measures 160 x 73.8 x 7.8mm and is quite light, weighing in at just 175g. The curved screen makes the device comfortable to hold in the hand, but the subtle angling at the sides of this phone minimizes accidental touches on the edge of the display. The easy-to-reach power button on the right edge is an added bonus. In my experience, the Honor 50 easily lasted a day of use – even with the 120Hz enabled at all times rather than having selected the dynamic option. For another point of reference, the battery went down from 92% to 88% after one hour of streaming music to my Bluetooth headphones. We’re fans of the Honor 50 display. It’s a 6.57-inch OLED panel with a FHD+ resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and 300Hz touch input rate. The display curves at the edges and is broken up by a cut-out for the front camera at the center of the top edge.

There’s a reflective ring around the main 108-megapixel sensor to draw further attention to this key selling point. I mentioned previously that the design draws attention to the 108-megapixel camera, and having used it, I can hardly begrudge its boastfulness. This sensor is super-strong, performing well in a variety of different lighting conditions and delivering good levels of detail. Taken with the Honor 50’s main camera sensor Taken with the Honor 50’s main camera sensor Taken with the Honor 50’s main camera sensor it makes a giant leap on design and display effect, and brings amazing visual sense and comfortable touch. The Honor 50 can establish mobile connections in GSM, 3G, LTE, and 5G networks. However, only two GSM and 3G bands are supported. The installed SoC supports LTE Cat. 18, which theoretically allows up to 1200 MBit/s for downlinking and a maximum of 225 MBit/s for uploading data.

Honor uses Microsoft's SwiftKey as the standard keyboard. It offers many customization options and is well suited for entering longer texts. The touchscreen responds quiet reliably. Extensive swipe movements are also possible on the screen without problems. Jumping into high-end games, we could sometimes tell we weren’t playing on a top-end chipset. Now and then the phone displayed stutters or lags, particularly in busy moments, like when the phone had to simultaneously load multiple moving parts. Using the device, the screen is probably the Honor 50’s single greatest feature: it’s big, sharp, smooth, and delivers basically everything you could hope for at this price point. Camera We mentioned this issue in our initial hands-on review of the Honor 50, but after several more weeks testing the phone, we still have no clear understanding of what is going on.
