Did you learn any new words or facts as a result of the story?No because I think it is a book for beginners. Which of the characters did you find most interesting? Why?Floella. She told me a lot of interesting things about England. The author has many problems. She moves from colourful Trinidad to a dull England to join her Marmie and Dardie who went to London for work. She feels unwelcome, she doesn’t know what an escalator or a telephone is for. She experiences discrimination. Her ambition is to meet the Queen. She works hard to settle in her new home. One day, she achieves her dream! Now she works to help other people at the House of Lords.

Which of the characters (if any) you did not like. Why?I liked all the characters, especially Floella’s father. From 24 February, there is no legal requirement to self-isolate if you get a positive day 2 test result. No, it was always an autobiographical story. In fact, when I wrote it at first it was twice as long and had to be edited to be so much shorter. So I didn't conceive it as a picture book until now. I would have liked some more detail about how Floella became successful. She wanted to meet the Queen and she did! I would like to know more about this. If you began your journey in Russia, you do not need to complete a passenger locator form, or take a COVID-19 test before travel to England or on arrival.I loved the look of Trinidad, the spectacular, vibrant colours. I felt sad when the colours changed in England and your classmates called you names. Did you enjoy the book? Explain your answer if it is yes or no.Yes. Moving to England was not easy.

Teenage rebels": Cane Warriors author Alex Wheatle on writing about young people living through incredible events I recommend this picture book to everyone. The vivid illustrations work so well with the writing. You can tell that Floella and Diane Ewen, the illustrator, worked closely together to recreate Floella’s world, making me feel as though I was there with her. The illustrations and descriptions are really memorable. My recommendation would be for all infants and juniors. KS3 might enjoy it too! Owl or Pussycat? Coming to England is such a popular book that it seemed a great idea to make a picture book version so younger children can enjoy it too. People might think it's easy writing a picture book, but it's not, especially when you've got quite a complicated real life story such as Coming to England. In a way, it was the same when I was writing my novel Coming to England for older children, which doesn't have even one racist word in the book. But if I was writing it for adults, then I'd use stronger words to give the real feeling of what it was like. You can't even tell 10 or 11 year olds what it was truly like. I wouldn't want to burden them with it. I love the illustrator’s vibrant colours in the book when Floella’s talking about Trinidad and the way the colours change in England. Her changing schools’ moment is something I can empathise with.

From 4am 22 November 2021, all children aged 17 and under will not have to quarantine on arrival in England.

You look at it holistically. I had to think very carefully about what I wanted very young children to know and grasp. Some of them know about moving to a new place, so they can understand the concept of moving. Some of them know about parents leaving, even if it's for a couple of weeks, so they know the emotional feeling that gives you.From 5 January, people flying from mainland China to England will be asked to take a COVID-19 pre-departure test. To ensure we are in line with the US National Hurricane Centre naming conventions, we are not going to include names which begin with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z. This will maintain consistency for official storm naming in the North Atlantic. How are storm names chosen? From 4am 30 November 2021, fully vaccinated people must self-isolate and take a PCR test before the end of day 2 after they arrive in England. They may leave self-isolation if their PCR result is negative. Lateral flow tests will not be accepted. You do not need to take any COVID-19 travel tests or self-isolate on arrival in England if you qualify as fully vaccinated.
