Jan Pienkowski's gorgeous illustrations perfectly complement Joan Aiken's words and each story feels almost like a much older story that you remember reading in a book of fairy tales. Envy and jealousy — feelings familiar to many children who may have taken, borrowed or used something that didn’t belong to them. They may have squabbled about ownership or use of an item or had someone take something of theirs. Learning a sense of ownership as well as sharing is important in early childhood. There was no milk to moisten his cereal, only a slap to the head for daring to ask. He grabbed his bag and disappeared before she used him as an ashtray, again.

A bed for the night" is about The Weevils, a playing group, not too different from Brs. Grimm's Musicians of Bremen, except that they all are human, and the Baba Yaga takes a part in the plot. And "The elves in the shelves", where all the creatures in a little girl's books come out and play. I loved this when I was a child, but more or less forgot about it until I came across it in my university library. Then I remembered the magic of it, and all the illustrations were familiar... I didn't remember all the stories, but the first and second in particular made an impression on me, and the one that basically included Baba Yaga. They're almost fairytales, and that's how I'll shelve them here. Joan Aiken was a much loved English writer who received the MBE for services to Children's Literature. She was known as a writer of wild fantasy, Gothic novels and short stories. We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as the short stories in this collection are whimsical yet moralistic and have such lovely examples of literary language interwoven with humour that they are, we feel, perfect for the age-group. And as each story is relatively short, this will help children who are less-confident in their reading to feel a sense of achievement as well as supporting comprehension- development and understanding of story- plot and structure. Because Joan Aiken is the sole author of the anthology, this affords us a great opportunity to compare pieces by the same author in terms of style, use of literary devices and themes. A fellow Robin Hobb lover gave me this book after we shared our mutual awe for The Realm of the Elderlings series, in a conversation that soon turned into discussions about magical realism books. Even though, Robin Hobb books are not particularly written in the magical realism genre there is something whimsical about them and this is why this book came up. So that’s where I’m headed for my response to Charli’s challenge to In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about a thief or a theft. Looking for a fight, he couldn’t believe she was just sitting there clutching her stupid unicorn. He snatched it; danced a jig to her wails, then threw it onto the roof. Other questions can also be asked, and children can be encouraged to ask questions of their own, for example: ENGLISH: Eight semi-fairy stories by Joan Aiken. Two of them are about cats: "The cat sat on the mat" (and while there granted wishes) and "The baker's cat" (who was made to grow by a dosis of yeast). Here are eight gloriously imaginative stories for eight satisfying sessions of bedtime reading. There’s a flying apple pie, a cat that’s bigger than an elephant, a house that lays an egg, storybook animals that leap out of their books at night, and a wealth of other wonderful characters and ideas, all with the colorful, dreamlike quality of the very best fairy tales. The Audible edition was read by Lisa Aiken who has a very homely English voice and carries the whimsy and humour across well. Pretty great post. I simply stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I’ve really loved browsing your blog posts. In any case I will be subscribing for your rss feed and I am hoping you write again soon!Magic has never been more elegantly shaped than in these effervescent short stories . . . The flight of imagination is delicately captured in Jan Pienkowski's accompanying silhouettes Julia Eccleshare, Guardian Was the North Wind’s punishment of Meg appropriate? (He blew the roof off her house so she got wet.) This week at the Carrot Ranch Charli Mills is talking about theft; of family pets, of the apples from her garden, of property, and even of good name through myths and false accusations. Una anciana panadera vive con su revoltoso gato, semi atrigrado claro ( pues parte de su cuerpo está completamente blanco, debido a el jugueteo que se lleva con el agua y la harina de los bollos y otros pastelitos y panes). Un día su dueña lo echa fuera mientras trabaja, para que no lo revuelva todo...por un conjunto de acontecimientos y acciones, Mog crecerá, lo que le deparará un problema a la anciana dueña y al simpático gato. A spectacular collection of magical folk-tales for children. Each one is wonderfully weird and creative.

Filled with poetic repetitions, each story beautifully balances the prosaic with the wondrous – the old lady who mistakenly slips a bit of sky into her pie, which then floats her away; the little girl who finds elves in the shelves and a tiger in the house on her birthday night, and the mesmeric fable of three railway men manning a desert station who dream of travel. She was born in Rye, East Sussex, into a family of writers, including her father, Conrad Aiken (who won a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry), and her sister, Jane Aiken Hodge. She worked for the United Nations Information Office during the second world war, and then as an editor and freelance on Argosy magazine before she started writing full time, mainly children's books and thrillers. For her books she received the Guardian Award (1969) and the Edgar Allan Poe Award (1972).

Telling the teacher — sometimes called “dobbing” in Australia. When is it important, when doesn’t it matter? What were Meg’s motivations? Forgotten the title or the author of a book? Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. My "acid test" of a good children's book is: does it appeal to adults? If not, there's probably not much there at all. Witness the fact that many, many adults enjoy Beatrix Potter, Milne and other "children's books" all their lives long, while the "fad" books fade away to no one's regret. This is an enduring classic, and I actually think I got more out of it at fifty than at a younger age. That is not to say that it's "over the heads" of children, because it's not. Note: My few words have not done justice to Joan Aiken’s beautiful story. If you can, please read the full version.)
