A is for Activistis an ABC board book written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for. Nagara, Innosanto. "About the Author/Illustrator". Archived from the original on 2017-07-24 . Retrieved 2017-06-01. A is for Activist offers an opportunity for parents to explore their values with their children. At this time in history we need books for children that use words like justice, ally, freedom, and advocate.” —Rona Renner, RN, parent educator, and host of Childhood Matters radio show I've come home from work to catch my father-in-law brainwashing my kids with Fox News playing on TV so it's nice to finally be able to combat that nonsense with an over-the-top left-leaning screed like this alphabet book.

Our Spanish-language imprint represents a major ongoing effort to introduce important English-language texts to new readers. I wish this beautiful and inspiring book was around when my daughter was young, but fortunately there were plenty of cool children around today who will devour what Inno is serving up!” —Dan Zanes, Grammy Award-winning artist of Catch that Train!

As publisher of several books cited as problematic or inappropriate — such as the gender-inclusive sex education books by Cory Silverberg and Fiona Smyth and social justice-oriented picture books by Innosanto Nagara — we strongly condemn these attempts to censor school libraries. Inno got his start as a student activist at UC Davis where he discovered his skills as a designer and photographer were effective contributions to organizing. After graduation he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he worked as a freelance designer for a range of activist organizations and campaigns until he joined Inkworks Press Collective in 1995. It was during his time at Inkworks that he started developing the Graphic Design for Social Change principles that have guided his work ever since. In 2002 he launched Design Action Collective. Modeled after Inkworks, Design Action was to be a worker-owned collective union design and strategic communications firm dedicated to serving the Movement for Social Change. The following year, Inno proposed what was to become Designs on Democracy: Communication for Liberation—a national convening of design and communications activists aiming to share strategies and build community. This is an amazing book: the safe course would be a simple message of civic engagement, maybe a little dicey flirting with citizenly disobedience. Instead, this rattles through environmental justice, civil rights, LGBT equality, pretty much everything anyone has ever considered worth fighting for. Beautiful illustrations, rogue cats, a message of fire and light.” We teach at Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES), which is a federally funded school serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing students from birth to 8th grade. KDES is located on Gallaudet University’s campus in Washington D.C. Our curriculum follows a bilingual approach that uses American Sign Language (ASL) and printed English as the languages of instruction. Over 70% of our students are of color, and we have several students whose home language is not English or ASL, including but are not limited to Arabic, Urdu, Spanish, Farsi, and Chinese. Meanwhile Elizabeth Acevedo, who swept young adult fiction awards in 2018 with her book, The Poet X, said recently at a lunch in Washington DC, that as an Afro-Dominican author she has no interest in upholding the supposed “nobility” of the classics. “I don’t write for that canon,” she said. The number of minority characters and authors has been steadily climbing since 2014, with authors of color winning a growing number of awards, including the Newbery medal and the National Book award for young people in 2018. a b La Ferla, Ruth (2017-06-30).
