Description

I have found the VALUE cards to be an invaluable part of my facilitation tool-kit. They were perfect when recently the subject of personal values was raised on a leadership development programme. The cards worked really well to get the discussion going and to help individuals pinpoint their value-set. Being so compact I keep them in my bag all the time now, and its great knowing how versatile they will be for both group work and one to one coaching sessions.” Often, the findings are surprising; they will lead to further discussion and, ultimately, a reevaluation of their lives. Ranking Your Values and Finding Your Life Deviation Score Because values can ground and direct our therapeutic work, enriching client lives, it is essential to understand what they are (LeJeune & Luoma, 2019): The General Strength Cards set is for a therapeutic context where practitioners integrate positive psychology practices. Use these cards to provide clients with an introduction to their strengths and give them concrete tools to enhance their psychological wellbeing. The cards can be used, for example by laying out 8-10 cards and explore what cards the client finds tempting to look into.

What do you want to happen with this strength? Do you want to do this more or become better at doing this? Strength cards may be a more accessible and low-cost way to encourage clients to reflect on their perceived strengths in a therapeutic context (Jumpp, 2018; Smith & Barros-Gomes, 2015).The shared worksheets provide valuable tools for increasing awareness and understanding of personal values, which can ultimately lead to more fulfilling lives. Use them to ask the right questions and reflect on what they want out of their lives. Then, ask them to come up with an example for each strength they have selected that they can provide in an interview. Ask the child to think of someone they admire or look up to. Examples you may give to help prompt them are their parents, a family member, or a teacher.

In addition, there are ideas for implementation in groups, i.e. classrooms, which can be useful for educators when promoting strengths or a character-based approach. However, the cards can also be used in one-on-one settings such as coaching and therapy. Our values are what we hold as precious to us. They are a preference or an internal reference point for what we believe is good, right and important. They are like a compass that can keep us on course. They influence our attitudes and behaviour. They guide our approach to life and relationships. They inform our way forward through the many choices we are offered every day, as we react and interact with others and situations. The following two worksheets are focused on getting a deeper understanding of the client’s values. Finding My Values Identifying our core values offers insight into living a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Knowing them can reduce complexity, bringing clarity to what we do, how we behave, and what we strive for (Berg & Slaattelid, 2017). Because when you understand your core beliefs, you can better appreciate and apply your talents and build them into strengths.

I have had these cards for several months & have given them to my clients to work out their own values. Something useful always comes out of the exercise” We have developed two sets of strength cards, with activities for the individual to reflect on how to apply what they have learned. General Strength Cards To do so, the therapist considers the problematic thoughts and behaviors that cause or contribute to their difficulties and replaces them with value-driven goals and actions (Forsyth & Eifert, 2016). When we become disengaged from others within the family, we can lose close connections and bonds can become damaged.

If you are not quite ready to embark on this incredible course, you might want to consider a collection of tools first. For science-based ways to help others discover meaning, this collection contains 17 validated meaning tools for practitioners. Use them to help others choose directions for their lives in alignment with what is truly important to them. A Take-Home Message The list below brings together about 50 of the most common values for people (adapted from Russ Harris, 2010). Print out the list and place a mark next to each one, either a V for ‘very important to me’, Q for ‘quite important to me’ or N for ‘not so important to me’. Remember, there’s no right or wrong answer – this is just for you. As best as you can, go with your gut and try not to over think it.The worksheet I’m Great Because gives the participant open-ended statements to help them brainstorm positive qualities about themselves in different contexts (e.g., family, friends, and in the workplace).
