The main factor to consider is the quality, as in any other coin, as we will see later, but now let’s talk about the patina.

A lso read: 12 Most Valuable Lincoln Penny Worth Money Features of the 1964 Penny The Obverse of the 1964 Penny Coins minted in Denver have a mint mark on the obverse too – a small “D” situated just below the date. The Reverse of the 1964 Penny To preserve the actual patina of our coins, it is important to keep them in a stable and controlled place. That is why certified capsules are a wonderful option both for this and for knowing the grade as we will see below. A little history about the 1964 Lincoln cent Satin finish: The surface of a 1964 SMS penny will have a matte-like finish, with less shine than a regular penny. This is due to a special sandblasting process used during production.is a year noted for its poor penny mintages, which is why certain errors stand out from other years. Pennies and Halfpence coins continued to be minted for general circulation until 1967. Final proof sets were minted in 1970 before decimalisation in 1971 marked the end of the old Penny. At the end of the 18th century a shortage of small value coins, such as silver Pennies and Halfpennies, made trade difficult. This shortage was so great that some merchants and mining companies began to produce their own copper Penny and Half-pence ‘token’ coins. Look at the obverse (or “heads” side) of a 1964 penny, and the chances are it will look very familiar. It carries the same image of President Lincoln that’s been appearing on cents for over 100 years. The early coins had a simple image of two ears of wheat on their reverse. But 1959 marked 150 years since Lincoln’s birth, and it was considered time for a change.

Because the planchet is too small, the design disappears over the edges. Somehow, the coin wasn’t identified by the Mint’s quality assurance processes and found its way into the world. At most grades, values are similar to the Philadelphia pennies. And again, unless your coin has an interesting error, it’s unlikely to be worth much if it isn’t red. Most 1964 pennies are worth only their face value. And even coins in uncirculated condition are likely to be worth only a few dollars. The coin immediately proved to be widely popular; a fact that was largely compounded by coin’s silver composition. Hoarding of 1964 Kennedy halves was immense. For that reason, the coin failed to circulate well. In fact, many numismatists believe that the early hoarding of Kennedy half dollars is one main reason the denomination doesn’t circulate today.

Indeed the only coins that contained silver were the Kennedy half dollars from 1965 to 1970, but their composition was not too pure either. They included only 40% silver. Thus, the U.S. Mint devised the SMS (Special Mint Sets) from 1965 to 1967 to eliminate the shortage of circulating coins. What does a coin collector look for in the first place? The mint mark. Therefore, to discourage the public from hoarding coins, the Mint issued all Mint Special Set coins from 1965 to 1967 without any mint mark. There are several characteristics to look for to determine if a penny is a 1964 SMS (Special Mint Set) penny: Coins are graded from 1 to 70. 1 denotes an identifiable coin in poor condition and 70 is a flawless example.

In 1937 the reverse design changed from Britannia to be replaced by Sir Francis Drake's Golden Hind. They were coinage in two U.S Mints since San Francisco Mint stopped manufacturing these cents in 1955: There are also proof coins (list of U.S. Proof Sets with prices), of which almost 4 million were minted, but the rarest of this year’s pennies are undoubtedly the 1964 SMS penny as we will see below. List of most highly-priced 1964 penny errors Above Lincoln’s portrait are inscribed the words “In God We Trust”. “Liberty” is inscribed to its left, while the date is on the right. The top of the coin has the country name, also following the curve of the edge. Beneath it, written on the horizontal, is the Latin motto “E pluribus unum”. The words mean “From the many, one” and honor the creation of the USA from the individual states. Other Features of the 1964 Penny The decimal Halfpenny measured just 17.14mm, weighed only 1.78g and was only ever minted in bronze. It was the smallest ever UK coin. As a result, it was never very popular and was withdrawn in 1984.

Frequencies show the percentage of Numista users who own each year or variety among all the users who own this coin. Since some users own several versions, the sum may be greater than 100%. Get this coin All other things being equal, the most valuable copper coins are those graded red. Next in line are red and brown, with brown being the least valuable. An original patina, generated by the years of “life” of the coin is highly valued by collectors, so you should never clean a coin without consulting an expert since in most cases you will greatly diminish its value. If your coin is a bright red color, it will be more valuable than brown or red and brown examples. The most valuable coins have no wear or scratches at all, or only the most trivial flaws. A 1964-D penny in circulated condition is worth its face value of one cent. However, if you have a 1964-D penny in uncirculated condition or as a Special Mint Set (SMS) penny, it could be worth significantly more. Early Pennies were pure silver, exchangeable for and worth their weight in the precious metal. The Halfpence coins were, likewise, half the weight and also equal in value to their weight in the precious metal content. We are indebted to Declan Magee Coins and Numista member Sjoelund for their kind permission to reproduce the images below which list some of the varieties for this series.
