It was in the early 60s that a British business man discovered Tommee Tippee and set up a manufacturing unit in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK to produce the baby feeding products of cups and accessories. The original cup was designed by a Doctor with a weighted base which prevented it ‘tippping’ over and was embellished with a picture of a dog owned by the plastic company’s producers called ‘Tommee’; hence the name Tommee Tippee. In 2020 it won the'Parenting Brand of the Year' by Made for Mums. Before you pump, you should use a ruler or measuring tape to find the diameter of the base of your nipple in millimetres. You should only measure your nipple on its own, don’t include your areola (the outer edge around your nipple). Nipple shields might be recommended if there are problems positioning and attaching (latching) your baby to your breast. Your whole nipple should fit comfortably without much, if any, of the areola entering the tunnel before you start pumping. For safety and hygiene reasons it is recommended that the nipple shield is replaced at least every 2 months.

Follow the instructions that come with the shield to put it on correctly. Your baby can't get a proper attachment to your breast if they only have the tip of the shield in their mouth. Position during feeding Nipple shields that are too small will not go far enough into your baby’s mouth. This stops deep attachment to the breast. Nipple shields come in different sizes based on the size of your nipples. Ask your PHN or midwife for advice on how to measure properly. The shields are also BPA-free for total reassurance They can provide short-term help with breastfeeding problems but can cause your body to produce less milk.Once you have your measurement in millimetres, add 4mm to this measurement. This is because it’s better to have a larger breast shield diameter than your nipple base size so that when your breast pump is used and creates a vacuum, it’ll make your nipple slightly larger. Having a gap of about 4mm between your nipple and the breast shield allows for your nipple to expand comfortably while you’re pumping. So, if your nipple base measures 20mm across, the correct horn size for you is 24mm. Your nipple should be centred in the middle and move freely in and out of the tunnel while you pump without causing rubbing, redness, or pain. Close monitoring will help them decide if you're ready to start breastfeeding directly from your breast.
