I didn’t much care for Ghosted by this author at all, but then I got it confused with another book with a similar title since I’m an idiot and was all about trying to get an early copy/first dibs at the library for this new release. I’m happy to report I wasn’t disappointed once I finally got my hands on it. Where I struggled a bit was with the tone. Is the novel a slow-burn family drama? Or a domestic thriller? It felt a little like what you’d get if Anne Tyler and Lisa Jewell decided to co-author something. Comparison to either of those two writers is far from a bad thing, but I’m not sure they’d make great collaborators.

Emma loves her husband Leo and their young daughter Ruby: she’d do anything for them. But almost everything she's told them about herself is a lie. The writing was competent and many reviewer's seem to love this story (a lot more than me). I just found the various plot points unlikely and the reveals a bit of a let down. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Imogen Church and Theo Solomon who are the voices of Emma and Leo. They narrate with passion and believability that bring the characters to life. What a great listen! As their relationship begins to strain, it feels real and heartbreaking. The breach of trust is at a place where Leo feels betrayed. What he discovers about his wife leads him to believe he doesn't know her at all. Emma is sure she has lost the love of her life! This one is a slow-burn with lots of tension and suspense. As we uncovered Emma’s secret, the layers were so well executed and developed that every curve ball and reveal kept me guessing. It isn’t very often that these types of slow-burn thrillers keep my attention and I was hooked until the very last word.

Readers in the U.S. have really been loving The Love of My Life. I get it. Rosie Walsh’s latest novel is full of twists and turns, and I never was fully certain where the story would go. Because Leo's wife has had a brush with death (from cancer… the publisher blurb just mentions an “illness”), he looks into her past. He's an obituary writer and just can’t help himself from starting hers just in case. What he learns is that she’s not who he thought she was, and she’s got a whopper of a secret (or two! or three!) in her closet.

Brilliantly plotted and beautifully written, what really elevates Rosie Walsh’s book above the competition is the characters. Contradictory, flawed and entirely human, I loved and rooted for them like real people.”

I have held you at night for ten years and I didn't even know your name. We have a child together. A dog, a house. Let’s put it this way, if it weren’t for work I would have been able to finish this book in a day.”
