During daydreams, we are slightly detached from our immediate situation. That can mean we are more receptive to ideas generated within our subconscious. But we shouldn’t take daydreams at face value. Their real meaning is often cryptic and has more to do with ‘trying out’ various courses of action than wanting to be a film star or a neurosurgeon. Although the content of daydreams varies hugely, two common themes are the ‘conquering hero’ and the ‘suffering martyr’.

Ian Russel McEwan is a novelist born on June 21st 1948, in Aldershot, England. He was the son of an army major, McEwan and moved often as a child and spent his childhood in places such as Asia, Germany and Northern Africa.

According to several studies, daydreaming appears to be the brain's default setting when no other external task is occupying its attention. A group of regions in the brain called the default mode network is lit up only when the brain is left in a sort of ‘idle’ state. These areas of the brain light up in sequence only when daydreaming.
