He needed some mad characters for his story and he used one which had for centuries been referred to as mad - the March hare. The March Hare doesn't appear in the show. However, he appeared like an antagonist, linked with Jefferson's past into the comic Out of the Past. Traditionally hares were associated with witches, possibly because of their ability to seemingly ‘vanish’ and also due to their ‘mad March boxing’ antics which seemed to onlookers to be a witch’s dance. Witches were thought to be able to transform into hares to flee from impending trouble.

The March Hare makes a small cameo appearance in Fantasmic!, during the bubble montage in the Disney's Hollywood Studios version of the show. The March Hare plays a minor role in the game, only seen at the Mad Tea Party section of the Alice in Wonderland mini-game. Here, the March Hare and the Mad Hatter are having tea with Alice when a stranger (the player) drops in. They invite the player to dance along with them as part of the party. He is briefly shown to live in a house shaped like the head of a hare, which leads Alice to worry that he might be "raving mad". The March Hare later appears at the trial for the Knave of Hearts in Chapter Eleven.
