About this deal

Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey is remarkable. I was not expecting to like a 40%, young, chill-filtered whiskey as much as I am. The blend of Irish Single Malt and Irish Single Pot Still creates a richness and depth that blows past my expectations and has me sitting here smiling like an idiot while typing this up and sipping on a glass. Writers’ Tears is an Irish whiskey that comes from a blend of single pot still and single malt Irish whiskies – making it relatively unique in the burgeoning Irish whisky scene. Many would consider pot still the definitive Irish style, but with the addition of single malt, and no grain whiskies present, Writers’ Tears is really trying to stand out. The mashbill consists of 60% malted and 40% un-malted barley – with the un-malted component historically being a hallmark of Irish whiskies. This whiskey remains non-age stated and is sourced from an unnamed Irish distillery and then blended and bottled by Walsh Whiskey Distillery in Dublin. The Walsh’s clever twist on Irish whiskey blending was to eschew the use of grain whiskey in their creations. The Irishman whiskey began as a blend of single malt and single pot still whiskeys, and soon added small batch or single cask Irish single malts under the same brand.

Double Oak is the third core expression in the Writers’ Tears range which includes the Copper Pot and Cask Strength versions. It is the 14 th expression in the wider Walsh Whiskey portfolio, including the extended Writers’ Tears and The Irishman ranges. This cookie is set by Rubicon Project to control synchronization of user identification and exchange of user data between various ad services. The Walshes introduced The Irishman Irish cream liqueur in 2005, and the following year, having secured a supply deal with Midleton distillery, The Irishman brand pivoted towards independent whiskey bottling with the launch of The Irishman Founders Reserve whiskey.

Writerṣ Tears” is a unique old Irish Pot still Whiskey. It is a vatting of Single Malt and Single Pot Still whiskeys. Distilled from 60% malt and 40% pot Still (No Grain). Writers Tears is triple distilled, non -peated and matured and aged in American Oak bourbon casks. Through its partnership with the Legaret family, Walsh Whiskey recently introduced French oak to followers of the Writers’ Tears portfolio with the limited release of Writers’ Tears Cognac Cask. Encouraged by it’s success, Bernard Walsh decided to make French oak a permanent feature in the Writers’ Tears portfolio through the introduction of Writers’ Tears Double Oak. Writers' Tears is an unusual blend for Ireland in that no grain whiskey is used. Instead, this is a blend of triple distilled Single Malt and triple distilled Single Pot Still whiskey, both of which have been sourced from Bushmills and Midleton respectively. The blend is roughly 60% malt and 40% pot still and the grain is unpeated.

Away from the writers’ enjoyment of a dram, the Irish whiskey barons were rebelling against the emergence of what they saw as inferior grain from Coffey Stills. The barons were protective of the traditions that had made their success possible and at that time, one whiskey style was held high above all others. Known as the ‘champagne of Irish whiskey’ it was a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. It was enjoyed by many of the great Irish writers of the day… of course less for its inspirational qualities than its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture! It was said that they enjoyed it so much, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey.

On the nose: A definite sandalwood note on the nose along with pine, white chocolate and caramel. Underneath this are flashes of apple and pear and eventually some citrus zest. The nose does feel rather tight and closed though. Water does improve things making the nose more overtly fruity with dry woody spice and citrus oils.

The Copper Pot is a great value blend that offers excellent value for money, is well balanced and offers enough to keep you returning to the bottle. I feel that if this was delivered at 46% it would be a 7 but I understand this may raise the price a little although I'd happily pay a little extra for more flavour and that I think the extra abv would bring to the table. That being said for the price there is little to argue over. Finish: Short to medium. Lingering sweetness with very little spice. Soft and delicate finish with little to no burn. A very easy drinker. Rich and heavy it has layers of sweeter fruity flavors and darker malty and candy flavors and aromas that balance each other out quite well. I can’t even imagine what the Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey would be like at cask strength. I saw that they put one out so I guess I’m going to have to do some hunting. On the nose: Quite a green and spicy nose. Green apples, lemon thyme, green wood and pot still spice. Honey sweetness comes through in time with malt and a hint of mint. Light milk chocolate notes with new leather too.

Conclusions

In 2009 the Walshes expanded their brand portfolio with Writers’ Tears, another Irish whiskey blended only from single pot still and single malt Irish whiskeys. Writers’ Tears was an immediate hit with the Irish whiskey cognoscenti and the range was soon expanded to include different cask finishes and an annual Cask Strength release. While we have divested from our own distillery, it is a significant milestone in our whiskey journey.
