There, Eugene tries to propose to Rapunzel for second time, but she is hesitant to marry him at first. While discussing Eugene's proposal with Cassandra, a mysterious warrior named Adira appears at the camp, wishing to speak to Rapunzel alone. Cassandra, however, does not trust her, and a fight begins between the three, which Adira easily wins, and before leaving she tells Rapunzel that she will look for her later. Hook Foot informs Rapunzel and Cassandra that Eugene, Lance, and Shorty were captured by the Varon. Upon being brought before the Baron, Eugene is reunited with the Baron's daughter, Stalyan, who is also his ex-fiancée, and the Varon forces Eugene to keep the promise he made to his daughter and marry her or else suffer painful consequences along with Lance and Shorty, and Eugene reluctantly agrees after Lance is bitten by a poisonous spider. Eugene tries to convince Stalyan to call off the wedding and tells him that he is in love with someone else, only to realize that Stalyan knows all about his affair with Rapunzel, and she manipulates him by telling him that if he marries her, all it will do is take away his newfound freedom. The name "Eugene" is from the Greek Ευγένιος, which means "well-born"; "Fitzherbert" is a mix of Old French " fitz" or " filz" and Old Germanic "Her(i)bert" and would mean something like "son of the shining" (or "famous") "lord" (or "army"). Maximus is theatrically represented as a puppet in the live Tangled play at Disneyland's Fantasy Faire theater. The original concept of him being a prince was later used in Tangled: The Series making him the prince of an abandoned kingdom. Eugene is shown to be nervous and intimated around the king and is also revealed to have promised to watch out for Rapunzel, but is determined to prove himself and earn his respect, especially in " In Like Flynn", when Eugene helps King Frederic pull a prank over his rival monarch, King Trevor. Frederic and Eugene grow closer through this bonding experience, bringing Eugene closer to his future father-in-law and making Frederic more fond and accepting of him. Eugene remains on much better terms with Queen Arianna, who is more accepting and welcoming of him into the royal family. However, their relationship is briefly tested in " The Return of Strongbow", when Eugene recalled he had previously stolen a ring from Arianna eight years ago. Eugene admits and apologizes for his past crime and is prepared to face the consequences, but ultimately Arianna forgives Eugene and decides not to inform Frederic, instead simply states Eugene found her lost ring. Once his facade is dropped, and Eugene truly opens up to both Rapunzel, and himself, he is portrayed as a loving, loyal, and protective companion. For Rapunzel, he was willing to give up his life of thievery to remain by her side, in hopes of starting a new life for both himself and the princess, believing they've both deserved second chances after facing experiences less than pleasant over the years. Unlike Gothel, Eugene viewed Rapunzel as a person, caring for her feelings, rather than her magical hair. In spite of being greedy at the start of the film, Rapunzel's magic was never a concern to him, nor did he once ponder on the thought of using her for her powers to obtain wealth. When those who attempt to do so came about, such as Gothel, Eugene takes action and becomes a fierce protector, willing to go against foes twice his size, if necessary. He also proved himself to be selfless in this instant, risking his life for Rapunzel's safety, despite being given the chance to leave a situation safely.
