Description

Since no Monster starts the game in Tokyo, the Monster who plays first does not cause Monsters to lose heart with smash dice. King of Tokyo is a dice game for 2-6 players, where each player assumes the role of a monster trying to invade Tokyo. The game is a cross between Yahtzee — there’s a heavy element of rolling dice for sets — mixed with that king-of-the-hill game you probably played on the playground as a child. First and foremost, King of Tokyo: Dark Editionis a collector's edition, which usually means that narrows the audience ofthe game, but there are some special aspects of the game worth considering, and during the review, I’ll be considering the game for a wider audience—those that are familiar with King of Tokyo and those that haven’t played before. Before buying cards, players may spend 1 energy to change from biped form to beast form or vice versa. However, we’re not quite ready to ditch our original 2011 copy either. That’s partly because we own the Power Up expansion and find fun in playing with those monster evolutions as well. We also have King of New York and will still pull that out from time to time for a slight twist on the theme.

King of Tokyo is a modern classic. The game is often held up as a “gateway” game, and we here at the Opinionated Gamers put it on our list of 10 recommended intro games.

VERDICT

Ciascuno sceglie un mostro da utilizzare e ne prende la scheda con le rotelle per i punti vita (si parte da dieci) e i punti vittoria (si parte da zero, per arrivare a venti). You can also spend 2 Energy Charges at any time to discard all the cards in the marketplace and deal out three new cards. That can be a great option to deny an opponent a card that they’re saving up to buy. Optional 2-Player Variant If you don’t own King of Tokyo already, and you can get hold of Dark Edition, this is one to get – but only the die-hard fans need to replace their copy. A great update to an already great game.

It’s a new mechanic that adds value to the game, which makes the Dark Edition more than a vapid cash grab. It includes a seemingly minor tweak that I felt made the game better overall. VISUALS If you are in Tokyo (Tokyo City or Tokyo Bay) and you roll any smash dice, you wound all Monsters outside of Tokyo. But I’d like to use this review to comment on the Dark Edition specifically. This is indeed a collector’s version of the game, with enhanced components and cool new features. The new artwork by Paul Mafayon is gorgeous — the box is eye-popping with its accents and evocative cover — and the new bits (especially the translucent dice and energy charges) look fantastic. While in beast form, you cannot buy power cards, but you may reroll one of your dice an additional time.At its heart, King of Tokyo is a dice rolling game with a random card option draw element, but playing it is so much more. The risk/reward of the dice rolls and re-rolls, along with tactically managing going for Tokyo City along with your damage and the levels of damage you are doing to others, make it a lot more thought-provoking than the box contents would have you believe. If you’re a fan of King of Tokyo like I am, getting this limited edition while it’s still available is almost a no-brainer. The improved components in and of themselves are worth the price of admission. While my friends always used to joke that the green cubes used for the Energy Charges were “Energon Cubes” from Transformers, the new lightning bolt-shaped pieces are so much more thematic for the game. And the dice… they just are so nice. They’re the same chunky size as in the standard edition of the game, but these dice feel so amazing when you roll them. If you get your hands on them yourself, you’ll see exactly what I mean. Gameplay: The gameplay runs exactly the same in King of Tokyo vs Dark Edition. You might want to stop and admire the art for an additional moment in Dark Edition because it is on a new level never though possible, but that is about it.

In the game, when players roll 3 of a number on the dice, they get that many victory points. For example, if they roll 3 3’s, they will earn 3 points. If they roll 3 1’s, they’ll get 1 point. End of Turn – Certain power card effects happen at end of turn and will be resolved then. Once complete, pass the dice to the player on your left. And it’s not just a glossy remake. There is an addition to the gameplay that is worth talking about but remember this edition is a shiny toy that you’ll want to show off to your friends. It’s got premium components, new art, and a dependence on the same sturdy gameplay that made the classic so beloved. You cannot remove these tokens while you are in Tokyo: you must be outside of Tokyo to use the heart die to remove tokens.

If you are in Tokyo, the hearts you roll do not let you gain heart (you can only gain heart with Power cards). On a player’s turn, he or she roles 6 dice. The dice have six sides — a 1 symbol, a 2 symbol, a 3 symbol, an energy symbol, a wound symbol, and a heart symbol — and players are often trying to collect sets of the symbols. A player can roll up to three times, giving the game its famous comparison to Yahtzee.

King of Tokyo/New York/Monster Island Promo Monsters

The first monster to reach 20 Victory Points or is the last monster standing will cause the end of the game. This monster will be crowned King of Tokyo and receives bragging rights until the next game has been completed and a new King is crowned. Final Thoughts on King of Tokyo Player Count: Again, this is pretty much the same game, so you are going to see that same 2 – 6 with scaling for 2, 5 or 6. The 5 – 6 play is great because this game is all about the more the merrier. Probably play something else if you only have 2 players. The components as a whole are top-notch, and definitely a step up from the ones in the standard edition of King of Tokyo. How to Play King of Tokyo: Dark Edition
