About this deal

Of course, every dramatic set up needs its foil - the worldly and glamorous Gatsby figure who the narrator looks up to and who seems, at that point, to be the one who glitters and has it all. Our Gatsby was Lesley.

Liz confides her fears to her big sister Jess in the dark. In naïve, childlike fashion, Liz thinks that if mother gives birth to a boy then that means father must die in the war, in a causation chain. This is from overhearing adults say that babies born during a war are boys, to serve as replacement for the lost men. Liz also says that she would like to be the boy of the family. She can just wear boy clothes and cut her hair short. By the age of six most children have a strong sense that their gender is immutable, so Liz is an unusually gender fluid six year old girl. In this way, Liz is an unreliable narrator. However, as an older woman narrator she is plenty reliable, because she’s giving the reader enough information to connect the dots for ourselves. The ironic distance between the perception of young Liz and the knowing older Liz provides interest. There were things to be afraid of in the woods at the end of Autumn Street. But the year she went to live in her grandfather's big house in Pennsylvania - when her father went off to fight in World War II- Elizabeth couldn't put a name to those dark, shadowy fears. She was grateful for the reassurance of Tatie's strong, enveloping brown arms which held her when she needed comforting, and she relished her friendship with Tatie's grandson, feisty and streetwise Charles, who called her dumb old Elizabeth but didn't mean it, and who taught her to take risks. Together the two lonely children tried to interpret for each other an adult world -which was always puzzling and often cruel. Together, finally, on a day when snow obscured everything but terror, they left that world behind them and entered the world that was waiting in the woods. Elsewhere, following Lloyd’s death, Dan’s (Liam Fox) future in the village is looking bleak after pleading guilty during the hearing. The relationship with Charles' grandmother is incredibly beautiful. Sadly, on a cold winter day when Elizabeth and Charles use her new sled and venture into the woods at the end of Autumn Street, Elizabeth's protected life is deeply, forever changed. In the Anderson household, the family is treading on eggshells after Victor (Eddie Osei) explained that he has an unruptured brain aneurysm. If it ruptures, Victor’s life will be in serious danger, so is it only a matter of time before something terrible happens?

Plans are thwarted when it turns out Noah is inside with serious pneumonia. If this were a WW1 story I’d suspect pneumonia resultant from the ‘Spanish’ flu, but this is WW2. It must have been a different virus, or bacterial infection. Looking further ahead, October usually means Super Soap Week for both Coronation Street and Emmerdale. While a few storylines have been confirmed for characters in the Dales, we’re still awaiting any dramatic details about what’s ahead for the residents of Weatherfield.

Peri may even find a few allies along the way, including former love rival Nadira Valli, who is similarly starting to suspect that Rayne isn’t the caring and considerate girlfriend she claims to be, having witnessed her gaslighting tactics first hand. Sienna and Rayne aren’t the only ones on a mission, with Freya Calder determined to win Hunter McQueen’s affection, with the student having developed strong feelings for the teacher, who remains oblivious to what she’s up to.

Universal credit and other working-age benefits in England and Wales to increase by 6.7% from April, in line with September's inflation rate I'm not, however, through with the fashion dichotomy that's unfolding in my exploration of winter 2023/2024’s trends. In a season which, by all accounts, is being applauded for accurately representing women and their needs, why is the industry ignoring a significant number of us in the process? Research carried out by Vogue Business found that, of 9137 looks across 219 shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris, just 0.6% were plus-size (UK 16+), and 3.8% were mid-size (UK 10 to 14). This means 95.6% of looks presented for winter 2023 were in sizes UK 4 to 8. Why is this the case? Some are blaming the trends themselves—much of the '90s and '00s looks that are currently resonating were first born in a thin cultural peak, and life as we know it is imitating that once more. I say let's speak the truth: The luxury fashion industry still has a problem with non-straight bodies, and any progress it has made to be more inclusive has regressed. In recent years, the body-positivity movement has continued to gain momentum and is an agenda-setting topic on social media, so why is it that so many brands are unwilling to embrace it? For this, I don't have the answer, but I can direct your attention to the brands that were body-positivity allies this season and whose shows I saw myself represented in—Karoline Vitto, Sinéad O'Dwyer, Ester Manas, Christian Siriano, Collina Strada and Di Petsa. The census collection is designed so that each group of postcodes should contain at least 100 people (50 in Scotland). The huge house with all the rooms and the manicured lawn and staff is the archetypal cold house, where Liz does not feel nurtured or safe. She gets any nurturing she needs from the cook and housekeeper, not from her own mother or grandmother. CHAPTER FOUR

While waiting, Charles and Liz cut a worm in half. They don’t mean to kill it – they have heard they’ll end up with two worms. This scene stands in for the big struggle scene we’ve been hoping for (not hoping for?) between Charles, Liz and Noah. Noah’s not-evil twin emerges instead, and the children happily accept him. One evil twin, one good twin is kind of symbolic of the sides during the war. Two people can look the same in every way, but because of minor differences (place of birth), one can seem evil while the other benign. Significantly, the twins’ father is German and has been taken away by the authorities. Much of the story is devoted to Elizabeth's budding friendship with Charles and the accompanying issue of racial prejudice and bigotry, which the six year old isn't quite able to grasp. Elizabeth often comes across as opinionated and defiant, but underneath it all she is sometimes just fearful or trying to maintain the appearance of keeping up with her older sister. There are periods of sadness in this story, along with births, deaths, good children, evil children, and the ongoing worries related to war. Much of the rest of the story is sweet and poignant though. According to the author's notes at the end of the book, pieces of this story were semi-autobiographical.
