Description

This pedal is called the Golden Horse Overdrive. The Golden Horse is a well-made pedal for the price and compares very favorably to the “Clone Centaur,” which is no longer in production. Much like the Clone Centaur, the top end has been slightly attenuated, giving you a slightly warmer/darker sound than the original. There is still plenty of top-end available in this pedal, so no need to worry about that. Build quality wise the Golden Horse has a well-constructed case and potentiometers. There’s nothing to complain about with the TTone Golden Horse. For the price, it will be considered by many the best value for money Klone out there. 5. The Joyo Tauren R-01

Look, I’m not saying I’m a Tauren, but I will ask you this: have you ever seen me and a Tauren in the same place at the same time? The original Centaur took up a beastly amount of pedalboard space, and the KTR (manufactured by Klon’s inventor Bill Finnegan himself, but contracted out to make it compatible with mass production) features a smaller footprint. A toggle was added to switch between true or buffered bypass. Some say it doesn’t compare to the original, but considering it was built by Finnegan himself, the KTR is the closest to the Centaur a pedal can get, according to its creator, who – by the way – thinks it sounds exactly the same. You’re welcome to grab a glass of water, take a sip, and read that over again so you can spit out your water dramatically. Or you can just do that Chris Farley Folgers crystals thing where you're furious, you're flipping tables, making a scene. That works, too.

One of the few mini-klones available on the market (at least for now), the MXR Sugar Drive simplicity is deceptive. The drive knob in this circuit blends the clean guitar signal with the overdriven one as you turn it up, while the circuit’s headroom in increased through what is referred to as a “Charge Pump.” A switch lets you choose between bypass or MXR’s buffered bypass. The Wampler Tumnus features a gold mini-enclosure, which will save room on your pedalboard. In terms of how the Tumnus works with other pedals, it works great! Now you can buy Joyo products even cheaper! Only within the last 90 days we have lowered the prices of 14 Joyo products. It really becomes super cheap with our set offers and Creative Bundles in which further discounts are included. The R Series, or Revolution series from JOYO are the 4th generation of guitar effects and all feature some very cool ambient LED lighting. A version of the popular Archer with six graphic EQ sliders instead of a tone knob, developed by guitarist Steve Stevens. Each slider controls 18dB of cut or boost at 6 different frequencies.

Use with other pedals to shape the total gain, as a stand-alone overdrive, or as a slightly dirty boost to push the front end of your amp. The Klon Centaur is perhaps the most over-hyped guitar transparent overdrive pedal of all time. The thing is, though, they sound fantastic! The original Klon Centaur pedal sells for thousands of dollars on the used market. The Centaur hasn’t been in production for years, and the only re-release in recent times was the Klon KTR. The Tauren pedal nails the classic emulation of a saught after low-to-medium gain overdrive guitar pedal at a great price. This pedal is perfect for adding a clean boost, transparent overdrive through to warm overdrive / distortion to your tone. What makes the Ponyboy special is the fact it can do the Klon “thing,” but it can also be EQ’d thanks to its two-band EQ differently. Now, for those of you feverishly flipping through your World Atlas, let me clarify: we’re talking about World of Warcraft here. Now, I'm hip. I know that's a video game. I haven't played it yet because I've played Fallout 4 for seven years, but let’s put our cards on the table: we all know this pedal is based around the Klon. And honestly? It does the Klon thing pretty dang well. The Conspiracy Theory's voice is ever so slightly warmer/darker than that of the original Klon, with just a hair more low-mid weight under 500 Hz or so. I still gave this pedal a maximum tone score, because the differences are extremely subtle, and some players will probably prefer the Conspiracy Theory's slightly warmer character—if they notice it at all. The Verdict Used – This is the pedal that coined the term “Klone” (as in “clone of the Klon,” get it?). The Arc Effects’ stompbox is a recreation that replicates all components from the original design, at around… 10% of the cost or so! The Tauren pedal nails the classic emulation of a saught after low-to-medium gain overdrive guitar pedal at a great price. Where other classic ‘clones’ have fallen short, the Tauren from JOYO produces a warm transparent overdrive that adds dynamic gain to the signal without altering the tone of the guitar.

These modifications retain the integrity of the original Klon tones while giving you a few extra tone shaping abilitiesWithin a few years, the pedal gained legendary status, also because of the maker’s dedication to customer service, and to hand-wiring every unit that left their shop. Finnegan stopped building the original model in 2009 – at that point, he had hand-wired 5,400 of them. (You can find a more comprehensive history of the Klon here.)

This is the best affordable USA Made pedal. If I had to recommend one boutique Klon on this list, it would be the Chellee Ponyboy. This takes the Klon effect in a slightly different direction. Finding budget pedals that are well-made, creative, and unique can be a challenge, but in this article I'm going to show you one of my favorite budget lines that are currently being produced. The EHX Soul Food has somehow doubled in price since its original release, but it does nail the tones of the Klon. One of the sad things about EHX pedals is their build quality. They use cheaply made potentiometers (pots) that can break easily if the pedal is dropped. First off, this is so much more than just a pedal because it's a cab simulator/emulator and an IR loader. This is going to be a godsend for a lot of you. A lot of guitarists can't use a real guitar amp all the time. Maybe you need to play at home. Maybe you need some way to listen through headphones or run direct out into your DAW for home recording, or you play at venues where an amp isn't allowed because it's too loud in the Front of House.
