Silent star Lady Fay Zhu is a cipher for Anna May Wong, who from the early ’20s on was Hollywood’s most prominent Chinese-American actress. As played by Li Jun Li, Lady Fay has a side job writing silent intertitles, but Babylon exploits her mostly for ‘exotic color’ and lesbian appeal. Her nightclub act appropriates a classic Marlene Dietrich scene (from Morocco), kissing a female audience member on the mouth. Li also sings the obscene Harry Roy song My Girl’s Pussy. The song is real but was written several years later. external sight and sound of extremes. Still, even if some of the character arcs are less than original, the parts are played well, with Robbie in I don’t know, for me, there was too much of this and not enough of that. The balance was off, which left certain aspects of the storyline’s integral elements to flounder. I thought that each of the characters focused on had excellent potential, but, not all were fully realized, or, fleshed out. Those that were, were done quite well, providing the members of the cast, who portrayed them, ample room to shine. I won’t be specific, since I don’t want to give away which characters are which. One cannot talk Babylon without talking about its excess and, indeed, its extreme excess. In some ways the film brings to mind The Wolf of Wall Street, certainly a film in a whole different league in The Costumes of Babylon — Discover how costume design was fundamental to character development and the challenges that went into creating over 7,000 costumes for the film. In the general chaotic overstatement, the scenes meant to humanize Nellie don’t register strongly. Nellie surviving a rattlesnake bite in the throat doesn’t really register, either. The feature alone is on a 4K Ultra HD disc and a second Blu-ray. The third disc is a Blu-ray with the extras. The main video extra is a half-hour making-of piece that allows the director to have his say. On camera Mr. Chazelle is reasonable, intelligent and friendly. He assures us that early Hollywood was ‘the Wild West’ in every way possible. The clips chosen highlight Chazelle’s dynamic camera direction, which includes a lot of very good hand-held Stedicam-type shots.
