Description

The titanic Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – Age of Darkness boxed set contains a treasure trove of content, from a massive rulebook detailing the setting and stories of the Horus Heresy, as well as gorgeous photography and art, and all the core rules you need to play the game. The box also contains 54 Citadel miniatures – including a massive Spartan Assault Tank and a host of MKVI ‘Corvus Armour’ Tactical Marines – allowing you to build two opposing forces for out-of-the-box play, or construct a huge Legion force all your own. Alongside all of this, you’ll get all the game accessories and rules reference materials you need to immerse yourself in the worlds of the Age of Darkness. Its second purpose is flaying the flesh from the bones of the unworthy. After all, should you be a really poor loser, you can always take out your frustration on your enemy with one of these bad boys. Welts for days. The pintle mounted weapon can be: twin-linked bolter, combi-weapon, heavy bolter or flamer, multi-melta or a havoc launcher. The Captaphractii Terminators are built around a pair of legs with part of a tabard attached. Each pair of legs requires a single foreleg to be attached, and then the tabard attached at the belt.

The standard armament is a Gravis bolt cannon and a Gravis power fist with inbuilt combi-bolter. Either of these can be swapped for Gravis auto cannon, bolt cannon, lascannon, melta cannon or power fist with inbuilt combi-bolter. The combi-bolter can itself be swapped for a Heavy flamer, Plasma blaster, Graviton gun or Meltagun. Unfortunately, this transfer sheet only has transfers for the Sons of Horus as well as the Imperial Fists. If you were wanting to play any of the other Space Marine Legions, you’ll need to source some other transfers elsewhere. One of the most flexible legions, you can actually go a couple of different ways easily enough with this box. The Dark Angels are split up into the six wings of the Hexagrammaton, so it’s common to focus in on one of those for your army, at least to begin with. Now you know whether you’re a Loyalist or a Traitor, you can see the rest of today’s big reveals for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy in a new light. This is an old-school 40K rule (though it was also used in Warhammer Fantasy) that many people will be glad to see a return. This also leads rather nicely on to… Weapon Templates

The Contemptor Dreadnought is a faithful translation of the resin kit that comes on two medium-sized sprues. Unlike the Venerable Contemptor Dreadnought from Betrayal at Calth, the model is fully posable with ball joints for the arms, hips, and legs, as well as movable elbow and knee joints, and two differently posed feet pieces for each leg.

Front-and-centre, we’re going to have a look at the books and reference sheets that come in the Age of Darkness box.

This is a Scatter dice. Scatter dice are used to make using powerful weapons, like cannons or other heavy artillery a bit more exciting. They work hand-in-hand with the templates that we’ll get to in a moment. I’ve also gone on the lower end of things here so as to not overinflate the value. But any reasonably well-versed GW hobbyist could interpret the individual model values higher. There’s yet more brilliant stuff on its way to Warhammer+ this week – including the first episode of Hammer & Bolter from the Mortal Realms. The kits are actually very good. There are five poses around which you assemble your miniatures, pictures below. There is also an alternate build for a sergeant. For your Cataphractii you should run them with lightning claws – there’s little point running them with fists since you’re almost certainly going to be wounding on 2s anyway. Throw them in the Spartan which you should fit with, if possible, an assault cannon. The Contemptor can run full brrrrt with an assault cannon in the fist and a kheres on the other arm, if you can find one – if not, try and find a second fist with a second assault cannon. If neither of these are available, throw your preference of weapon on the other arm, you’ll find most of the choices can work well here. The Sergeant has a Power Sword along with his Combi-Bolter. He can swap his Power Sword for a Power Fist and trade both for two Lighning Claws. There are multiple frontal armour types, heads. pauldrons and small shield emblems provided to make your squads unique. Praetor Your Gods Compared to recent new edition box releases, Age of Darkness doesn’t actually do quite as well in terms of numbers. Indomitus had 61 miniatures, whilst Dominion had 60. However, Age of Darkness A) doesn’t have Hobgrots and B) does have a tank and a dreadnought. I think we can still consider this one to be a fair cop. The Sprues

So the game is all Space Marine Vs Space Marine. (forget your Orks, Eldar and other races – they don’t matter here). Though you may see the odd Daemon lurking about amongst the traitor legions. There’s a great variety of accessories available: weapon holsters, grenades, pouches, scrolls, breather masks, and scanners to name a few. You also have the option to equip some of the miniatures with banners or communications units, should you so wish.
