Round Base Stands – As the name suggests, these stands have a round base. They are great for stage performers like singers or stand-up comics, as these stands occupy less space on the floor, and the artiste is unlikely to trip over it. Fit the system that you’re going to use to hold the boom arm – we’d suggest that if you’re not sure, opting for the clamp in first instance. This boom will hold a massive 5 lbs (2.3kg) of maximum weight, making it ideal for those with heavier or larger, more expensive microphones. You can hang your pride and joy with peace of mind and watch it dangle in front of your face in all its shining glory. Now onto attaching the mic. Depending on the microphone you have, you’ll require either a 5/8″ thread (usually comes as standard), or to fit an adapter to take the mounting point from 5/8″ to 3/8″. At 1.87kg it’s sturdy, and can hold a respectful 1.9kg of microphone, but trust us when we say this, it’s no Compass or Gator. Nevertheless, its smooth to move too, and from what we were able to tell in testing, doesn’t squeak or rattle, even with a mic in situ. Speaking of mics, it also holds the majority of even the best vocal microphones with ease, including the Rode NT1-A, Blue Yeti and AT2020. However, that’s pretty much it. And that’s because unlike the majority of its competition, the Inno Gear isn’t designed to be revolutionary or look super gorgeous on camera.

You can’t fault the Compass on build quality – it’s built like a tank. What’s more, that all-aluminium construction is lightweight too (just 1.35kg), as well as practical. Anyone who’s a YouTuber will vouch for that. Reason being that while from the above the Compass isn’t the slimmest, from the side it’s a size zero. So, unlike a lot of other boom arms, the Compass doesn’t cut too harshly into your shot. And if you want it out of shot, you’ll also be pleased to know that the Compass ain’t no dwarf. At 82cm, it’s got the legs on most of its rivals. Work out how you’re going to fix the boom to the table. Decide on whether a permanent fixture, or just using a clamp is best. Designed for overhead use – trying to position the arm to hold your mic very low may cause stability issues. Tripod Boom Stands – A tripod boom stand has a long boom arm, which gives the stand a longer reach. For musicians, particularly instrumentalists, this can be the best podcasting microphone stand they are searching for.Two mounting attachments inside the box – a narrow desk clamp for smaller studio use, and a fixed surface mount, Unlike the series 3000, which for some reason has a fixed built-in integrated XLR cable, the series 4000 doesn’t have this flaw, that should not be a feature of a professional mic.

If you’re in the market for a microphone boom that’s both robust and heavy duty, then the Gator Frameworks 3000 series simply has to make your shortlist. And that’s because, aside from being made of high-quality aluminium and weighing in at just 2.2kg, the boom arm itself can hold up to 2kg of microphone! In other words, practically any mic you can throw at it. With the way music marketing is going, content creation is becoming an asset to bands and producers alike. Many have turned to YouTube and Twitch to host live production/DJ streams and band vlogs.Below you can find a detailed explanation of why those are the best, along with some alternatives. What is a Microphone Boom Arm? Some units are stiff to handle, so after you put them into a position it will require a lot of strength to move.

Usage recommendation: mic arm designed for overhead use, so trying to position your mic lower may cause you problems. The quality of calves also varies. In general, you should get a premium XLR cable for your recording setup. Here is a full guide on finding and buying the best XLR cables. K&M 23840 – K&M produces fantastic music equipment, but sometimes they are hard to find in the US. K&M is especially recommended if you are located in Europe, where their stuff is much easier to find. For as long as we can remember, the RODE PSA1 has been the benchmark, middle-of-the-road boom mic arm stand that all others are measured against. There are a lot of lower-priced boom arms on the market, but they all pale in comparison to the value and quality that the Samson MBA series offers.

Super light, weighing only 2.98 pounds (1.35 kg) is easy to use at the same time supporting heavy mics, For one, the suspension boom arm includes a red LED “on-air” signal that is not seen in any other arm on this list. Whether or not this impacts your ability to write better music, is beside the point. It is a nice touch though, especially for podcasters and those who require such a feature.

The best microphone boom arm isn’t always clear cut – spoiler! So when you come to kit out your music studio, DJ booth or set up for a podcast, you’ve simply got to wrap your head around mic booms. There’s no ‘maybe’ about it. A good quality boom really does make a difference. If the boom arm you’ve chosen doesn’t come with a built-in cable this is also a good time to insert that into the cable race.
