Description

The introduction to the text gives a fair representation to the way that the book is written, and van Inwagen throws some humor around throughout the whole thing. In this classic, exciting, and thoughtful text, Metaphysics , Peter van Inwagen examines three profound questions: What are the most general features of the world? No empieza por esa parte y cuando por fin atiende el asunto es más bien para arreglar argumentos que, se supone, ha expuesto sus debilidades. This is an OK introductory text for students who are unfamiliar with the basic concepts of metaphysics.

The author is humble enough to recognize that thoughts and emotions are presently beyond our understanding, but makes arguments on intuitive grounds - and intuition on it’s own lack reliability and a case stronger than personal preference. In my experience with metaphysics, it is a very rare skill to accurately and clearly analyze the topics surveyed in van Inwagen's text. Philosophy is nothing without discussion, and throughout the course I felt like this book helped me articulate my own position better than I would have if I agreed with everything written down. I would love to look further at some of his arguments for you and interact with them; I just don't have the time or energy right now. Although Van Inwagen does posit his own views, he spends more time picking at opposing arguments rather than supporting his own, but that is something very common in philosophy, so I guess it really isn't a criticism, per se.

If you asked me what Metaphysics was I would say "the study of reality" and may make a few remarks on Ontology but nothing more. Van Inwagen has also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland. Today, Van Inwagen is one of the leading figures in contemporary metaphysics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of action. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. If you are anything like me, you'll instantly realize that sentences about metaphysics never fully grasp the point you intended to make. The new chapter presents a theory of the nature of being and proceeds to apply this theory to two problems of ontology: the problem of non-existent objects and the problem of universals. Not only will you be greatly challenged, you will learn some good metaphysics and how to engage in metaphysical analysis. On the other hand, the new editions "part III" on ontology is one of the best expositions of this metaphysical specialty (see also E.

For anyone taking a Metaphysics course, or even anyone interested in getting involved in the conversation, I would highly recommend van Inwagen's introductory text. Aun si asumiéramos que nuestra percepción y cómo estas son dadas se sustentan sobre una realidad objetiva (cosa que, además, discute apenas hacia el final del libro), jamás establece la validez de algunas de las preguntas planteadas pasando por el más simple "¿por qué vemos/sentimos/pensamos así las cosas?e., all properties of a person, mental and non-mental, are simply physical properties) is hard-pressed to overcome the problem of identity (see Ship of Theseus discussion).
