The Perks of Being a Wallflower meets The End of the F***ing World in this dark young adult comedy about four unlikely friends dealing with the messy side of grief who embark on a road trip to Graceland. I was surprised by what happened to Tiger in the end, but Kathleen Glasgow is good enough to hide that surprise until the end. It reminded me of when I was grieving for my furbabies Tasha and Lilly, my bird Woody, Grandma, and Pop Pop. It is important to get to know about them, they are there and for many people a reality even if it can be hard to acknowledge that. Maybe some day it could be a reality for someone you know, a friend, a family memeber or even yourself.

Even though, I've never experienced foster care of anything like that, I still felt Tiger's fear and sadness when she was put into the system. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Tiger is a sympathetic character and anyone who has ever lost someone dear to them will recognize her struggles, her small victories and her grief. Tiger wanted to protect herself by not talking to her mother all day only to see a photo of a hideous gown she bought for her. Those thoughts about losing your mom, your life anchor at an early age of 16, and the harsh realities of the endless suffering of children without parents for awful reasons such as death, abuse, addiction, etc.

Kathleen Glasgow's prose commands the page with its trademark beauty and grace and Tiger Tolliver is a character readers will root for every step of the way – and won't soon forget. At least the last chapter of Atlas made me angry for how long and pointless it was, and how it’s ruining its story by preaching. Traded from foster home to foster home, from strangers to family and back again, she mourns her mother.I wanted to like it, I really did, and sometimes I did actually like it, but the writing and execution for me were the biggest issues. Tiger, Cake, and Thaddeus (and Mae-Lynn, and Shayna, and Lupe, and LaLa, and Sarah, and Leonard, and June . I realize every person experiences grief differently, but Tiger's felt more than a little over-the-top. Scenes and concepts that are strongly reminiscent of the Hunger Games fall flat: They aren’t bolstered by the original’s heart or worldbuilding logic that would have justified a few extreme story elements. My heart breaks every time I think about where she’s placed right now and I hope, I can only pray that she’s not alone wherever she really is.

On a day like any other, after harsh words you can't take back are exchanged, Tiger's mother unexpectedly dies. Instead of clean socks, my hands come away with a thick stack of envelopes marked Urgent, Last Notice, Contact Immediately. honestly, i can’t think of any character i have so genuinely sympathized with so quickly, and i’ve got the author’s great writing to thank for that. As she slowly begins to make a way for herself, Tiger creates a new kind of family, some related and some not, who will love her and travel forward with her. Growing up, Autumn and Finny were like peas in a pod despite their differences: Autumn is “quirky and odd,” while Finny is “sweet and shy and everyone like[s] him.The plot takes an unexpected turn and the latter half of the book becomes about how to keep going on despite an enormous hole in your heart through friendship and discovering a new family relationship when Tiger finds out she has an older sister, a sister who represents adults who do their best to make lives of these poor children a bit better.
