Berserk is a no-holds-barred series created by Kentaro Miura that features elaborate art, an absorbing story full of carnage and sacrifice, and a protagonist, Guts, who is one of the most brutal and unrelenting characters in all of manga. Writing for Advanced Media Network, Serdar Yegulalp said that the artwork of the first volumes are "a little rougher and less polished than the later ones," but that after the eighth volume "there is scarcely a page that doesn't look spectacular," adding that "Miura's loving attention to detail on most any page or panel is stupefying. After rescuing an elf named Puck, Guts can't shake the sweet and naïve sprite, who doubles as both comic relief and a counterpoint to Guts's nihilistic worldview.There's a bit of a joke in the Berserk community that says that no matter how bad your life might be, Guts will always have it worse. Guts denounces the very idea of prayer, claiming that the act of clasping hands only prevents people from fighting for their lives. At this pace, it will take a little over two years for the Deluxe Editions to catch up to the individual volumes.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine.
