WiseMoves gives a 360° view of the work MindWise do across Northern Ireland and tells the individual stories of our clients, volunteers, trustees and staff during the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, knowing what others think of you appears to be one of the most common things you might want to know about the minds of others. This teachings and practices came as reminders and reinforcement for me to stay in my path of growth and self-discovery and enrichment. And yet when Tal Eyal and I ran a series of experiments in which we asked people to predict how attractive they would be rated by a member of the opposite sex who was evaluating a photograph we took of them, we found that people’s predictions were no more accurate than chance guessing. It’s hard, after all, to define traits like intelligence and trustworthiness precisely, so it might not be so surprising that we have difficulty guessing how others will evaluate us on these ambiguous traits.

For many years, psychologists have been trying to answer this question by putting mind reading to the test. This role involves coordinating the Voices Forum, amplifying user voices, and influencing decision-making processes. But Epley is equally dismissive of those who believe that you can resolve conflicts by trying to see the other person's point of view, from George W Bush claiming on meeting Vladimir Putin that he found him "straightforward and trustworthy … I was able to get a sense of his soul," to Barack Obama urging Israelis and Palestinians to put themselves in the others' shoes.

This book can be a useful resource material for those who study communication, NLP, conflict management and other related areas.

And why do we think we understand our spouses, family, and friends so much better than we actually do? It's OK to speculate on whether chimpanzees have a theory of mind, or whether dogs can think, but it is only a step from this to a world inhabited by gods and demons who can be influenced by prayer – or to humanising technology. On the basis of his experience he bets you'll be wrong, and won't even manage to finish it by the latest time you imagine.
