About this deal

He's unable to resist coming to the rescue and increasingly he becomes a magnet for the bereaved, the lost and the dysfunctional. For much of Kate Atkinson’s third novel in the wonderful Jackson Brodie series, our rugged hero is more like a victim than the white knight of earlier books.

Jackson and Julia, the actress sister of the last book, are still together, but the relationship is starting to show signs of wear. But what I always remember fondly about these books is the humour, which is so often down to the smart prose and the ongoing battle between Julia and Jackson.Jackson has an extraordinarly happy ending (like Del Boy becoming a millionaire) - I wonder if the book was originally as a one off, and this was Jackson riding off into the distance. I. series consistent in its exploration of people’s behavior—from quirks to evils—starring a lovable hero who attracts all sorts, Kate Atkinson’s series will keep you entertained for a long while. Plenty of authors do this, but Atkinson is more effective than most because she understands what the inside of people’s heads are like. An astonishingly complex and moving literary detective story that made me sob but also snort with laughter. The first novel featuring the former policeman turned private detective, Jackson Brodie, appeared in 2004.

Being character driven rather than plot driven, Case Histories is nevertheless a complete page-turner.Thirty years later, Olivia’s sisters, Amelia and Julia, make a discovery that prompts them to hire a private detective. There were rumours of a third man, and high up well connected third parties - high court judges, peers of the realm, etc. He has two children, Candy (3) from his marriage to Crystal, and 16 year old Harry, who may be gay but isn't sure. I must of course mention that the book is stuffed full of humour, although young Harry Holroyd tells some groan inducing jokes.

In her inimitable style she presents several, seemingly disconnected, characters with various different problems. Kate Atkinson quickly became a favorite author of mine with her expansive writing, from her genre-mixed Life After Life to her historical spy novel Transcription. In short, Case Histories takes that very idea and reveals what really lies underneath… it could be said to transcend genre. However, after combing through every one of Theo's ex-client folders (mostly women fleeing domestic abuse), Jackson is unable to find anyone whose partners may have held a grudge against him.Tilly is an old woman who could have been a legendary actress, and she’s haunted by a lost child, a lost love, and old betrayals – and as cognitive decline sets in, her waking life is swamped by these intrusive scenes of the past.

I got this book ages ago, but had put off reading it as I don't really like the author's writing style. But Dr Hunter is so much more than an employer to Reggie who also adores the baby and who is to prove to be the most faithful of friends to Dr Hunter.

Assisted by his faithful colleague Louise Munroe ( Amanda Abbington), Jackson attempts to provide answers to those without hope of ever finding them any other way. It seems from the responses to the series that, at the very least, we've driven even more people to discover her effortless (sorry Kate - seemingly effortless) prose. To be fair, though, I wasn't too annoyed in this book, thought it was a big, good, well told story, loved meeting Jackson again, and thought the book was a great read. Flush with money, Jackson has bought his retreat in France, and lives there with a pony that his daughter Marlee loves when she visits. At the beginning of series two Jackson's life has taken a surprising turn both personally and professionally.
