Some girls, the book explains, love arts and crafts while others are skilled in speaking out for others in difficult times. And now, nearly 45 years later, I’m still volunteering with Girlguiding – currently running a Rainbow group with 40 girls aged 4-7. Through Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, we support girls to laugh, learn, explore and have adventures. I do like that there are portraits in the inner flaps of little girls and their future occupation and in the ending flap have portraits of inspirational women: Nicola Adams, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Marin Alsop, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Karen Gaffney, Jane Goodall, Claudia Gordon, Peng Lei, Maryam Mirzakhani, Josephine Reynolds, Arunima Sinha, Serena Williams, Valentina Tereshkova, Sue Wimpenny, and Mala Yousafzai.

They’re limited by gender stereotypes, and they can face barriers to accessing the things they need to be happy.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. These are the days when they start to believe they can do anything and I love being able to facilitate that!The book is an invitation to witness amazing things that different girls do each day and from the beginning it is made clear, that as unique as girls can be on the outside, all of varying colours and sizes, girls can do anything. list is never-ending and I think the fact that we see something new every time we read it is a testament to how great the pictures are.

Today, we’re squarely focused on what drives, challenges and excites girls here and now, and in the future.

Now the girl is in her 30s and, with the support of her mum, she still phones me and remembers who I am.
