Description

It’s dark and funny and brilliantly observed – just as I expected it to be based on Bella’s previous output. This entry was posted in Book Reviews and tagged audiobook review, Bella Mackie, book review, Charly Clive, How To Kill Your Family, Paul Panting, Women Who Kill. A girl who wants revenge on her family and kills them all but ends up being put in jail for a murder she did not commit.

It’s written from the point of view of Grace Bernard who is in prison for a murder she didn’t commit. I want to shed a tear but I could not care less as her mother died of cancer and not from overworking or anything like that.I potentially would have liked this subplot to cause more tension, through a possibility of it linking Grace to her actual crimes for example.

Well, this happened to me with Grace, the protagonist and narrator of Bella Mackie’s debut fiction novel, How To Kill Your Family, the only problem is, Grace is a serial killer.I’m more than 50% through my Goodreads goal for this year (you can follow me there too if you have Goodreads, same name as the blog), so I’m a little behind, but I expect to get caught up across the Autumn and Winter months with more time spent indoors! Told in a chatty manner, it reads like the ramblings of your sarcastic friend who's a bit bitchy and tends to exaggerate.

My original star rating of How To Kill Your Family was 3* as I found the ending, with a new character introduced in the final chapters who altered the course of the ending, to be very disappointing.

While not the most likeable of characters, Grace is still appealing and you do find yourself rooting for her, despite what she is doing. The novel’s protagonist, 28-year-old Grace Bernard, sets off on a mission to eliminate all members of her family with an end-goal of seeking revenge on her father, millionaire businessman and stereotypical playboy who abandoned her and her mother as a baby. Gekoski has been in the rare books trade for more than half a century, years during which time the business has changed only modestly.

The format made this incredibly difficult to read, as it was very slow paced, quite disjointed, and involved a lot of telling.

Is changing the sex of the protagonist really enough to fool people into thinking that this novel is original? She hates fat people, she hates instagrammers, she hates rich people, she hates men, she hates a lot of women for inane reasons, she hates everything, apparently.
