About this deal

As a final step once all the paper fibers are removed, paint a thin coat of mod podge over the entire image and allow it to dry.

Once completed, I then brushed a coat of Mod Podge Matte over the top of my completed plaque to seal and protect. It’s a little weird to wet your craft project and you’re going to be thinking, “am I doing this right? Using a sponge and water, wet the whole paper so that the picture shows through – leave it alone for 2 minutes. You can use a variety of wood surfaces: plain piece of wood, a wood slice, or a piece that looks like a pallet (this technique works on canvas too!I was able to remove all the paper from this large 12×16 inch wood pallet in about 45 minutes, which is just one episode of whatever show I happen to be binge watching.

However, this project can be frustrating: as you’re rubbing off the paper you have to be very careful to make sure you don’t also rub off the ink. I did a little crafting this weekend – in attempt to bring some Spring to my kitchen – a little something brighter – by creating some rustic art using Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium. A photo transfer is the process of transferring a picture (printed image or text) onto another surface. Start by creating a photocopy of your picture using a dry toner powdered copier and cut the image to size.Sandpaper - 240, 400, and 600 grit for progressively sanding the surface before placing the picture. Almost anything will do, even new wood that you painted and distressed – just make sure it has time to “cure”. TIP: When repeating the wet and rubbing steps to remove the paper, I highly recommend using a very light touch as you do not want to remove the paper too fast or possibly rub too deep to disturb your transfer image.

I do make transfers to craft foam with normal, classic Mod Podge and they work really well, I know many people make them to wood as well. As you get more experience, you’ll start to see exactly how much you can rub to reveal the image without ruining it. When using a sponge to remove the backing paper, use a light touch so as not to disrupt your transferred image. My preferred products for mixed media photo transfer are initially white but dry clear, and allow me to layer to my heart’s content.

The image quality is really sharp and the colors are very bright but it is important not to rub too much and rub the paper completely in two stages, first one you get most of the paper out, let dry, and second one you get the slight white layer of paper out, this way the results are better and you are less likely to rub away the transfer. Even with a better quality foam brush it was difficult to get a smooth, even coat so the decals were often a bit bumpy and uneven. Carefully pick up the image, for example with a pair of tweezers, turn it over and place it coated side down on your object. I like to let my moistened plaque set for just a moment and then I begin rubbing with light pressure over the entire plaque.
