The bigger the canister, the longer it will last. But again, ensure you use the stove in ideal conditions for maximum burn time. Most big brands, such as MSR and Brunton, have similar gas blends in their canister and are expected to perform similarly to JetPower. Better safe than sorry – make sure to bring enough fuel vapors to allow more fuel to transfer by pressing the purge valve five short bursts (Photo Set 3 bottom right).

When comparing fuel types, things get surprisingly complicated. I’ll try to summarize without getting too much into the boring details here. Jetboil hints that Brunton, Gigapower, Primus, MSR, and Snow Peak have the same fuel blend and valve types. However, most of these are US brands, so I’ve listed several UK alternative fuels that match the Jetboil specifications below. Where to buy Jetboil Jetpower fuel in the UK With that in mind, Jetboil has clearly gone for gold – 80% of Jetpower fuel is made up of the superior isobutane gas, which has a boiling point of -12°C (-11 Fahrenheit) as opposed to butane’s -1°C (30 Fahrenheit).

Determine how many grams of fuel to transfer by subtracting current weight (step 2) from its full weight Always err on the side of caution and take extra fuel, especially if you are travelling into areas where you don’t expect to find many people. That extra 100 grams is the hot meal that keeps you going until you are rescued if things go pear-shaped. Useful Resources What fuel does Jetboil use? UK Alternatives & Compatibility

The colder it is, the harder it is for any gas canister to produce the pressure to burn well. Wind will blow your heat away, and large volumes of water will take longer to heat to the desired temperature and use more fuel. The Calculator allows user changes during use but will reset after closing the application; the Tool can save all changesIn other words, isobutane provides the advantage of working longer in colder weather than butane does. Do JetBoil Stoves Work in Cold Weather? That said, I’m open to surprises! If enough folk are interested, I might consider running a test to see whether Jetpower stands out from the crowd – drop me a line in the comments if that’s something you’d like to see! When transferring using a purge valve, both fuel and vapors stay at the same temperature and only enough vapor is purged from the receiving canister to draw in more liquid fuel to the canister’s original fuel weight. Since the fuel and vapor for both canisters remain at the same temperature, the pressures in both canisters will stay within the manufacturer’s recommended rating for the canisters. Thus, when done properly, purging excess vapor in the receiving canister avoids over-pressure issues. The answer to how long Jetboil fuel will last depends on what size canister you are using: 100g canister should last around three to five days, a 230g canister should last around seven to ten days, and a 450g canister should last around two weeks to a month. These are estimates based on normal usage, more or less usage will, in return, result in more or less fuel consumption.

If you’re scratching your head at how a mix of isobutane and propane manages in chilly conditions when they have such different boiling points, I’ll cover this later on. A 230g gas canister lasts approximately 27 – 40 meals OR 24 liters OR 6 to 10 days OR 1.25 hours continuously under ideal conditions How long does a 450g canister last? See above for estimates of how long each size of Jetboil canister will last on normal trips. How Do You Store Jetboil Fuel? Jetboil fuel consists of an 80% Iso-Butane, 20% Propane mixture, making it suitable for use in all seasons and able to perform in temperatures as low as -44°F. Compatible fuel canisters must also have a Lindal valve. Different food uses different amounts of fuel as well—if you buy something like Top Ramen that needs to be boiled for a longer amount of time, you will use more fuel. Keep this in mind when purchasing food for your trip.A head to head test with the GSI Outdoors Glacier Stove showed that the Jetboil MiniMo can be as much as 5 times more efficient during windy conditions. Further Reading Yes, you can safely store Jetboil fuel in a home closet. If you don’t have a basement, then your second storage choice would be a closet that is free of open flames, and ignition sources, like hot water heaters, or furnaces. Optimally, you’d want your storage closet to be in the conditioned air envelope of your home, and not be subject to window related solar heat gain, via direct sunlight. However do not store Jetboil canisters in a manner where heavy objects are directly on top of them, potentially compromising their physical integrity, and increasing the likelihood of leakage. Can You Leave Jetboil Fuel in a Hot Car? vapors to allow more fuel to transfer by pressing the purge valve five short bursts (Photo Set 5 bottom right).

This is one of the main reasons people search out alternative fuel brands: availability. If you’d rather go with one of the premium fuels, that’s totally fine; you may just need to plan ahead; most fuels can’t be shipped, as changes in altitude (like on a place) can cause pressurized cans to explode, so online shopping may not work. Jetpower fuel can be recycled at your local recycling centre. However, you must ensure the canisters are completely empty before recycling them. E.g., 2 x people eating 3 hot meals a day, including a drink (6 litres of boiling water) per day = 60 grams of fuel per day or 19.5 mins of burn time. Precut and prepare your ingredients before starting the Jetboil stove to save fuel. Originally invented in 2001, the Jetboil is one of the most well-liked and convenient camping stoves. Jetboil is light, it is easy to operate, and it works for a lot of different camping cooking methods. The stove is functional for any kind of camping trip, but depending on the camping trip length you will want to think about how big a fuel canister you plan to bring to fuel the stove.
