Description
Lightning – Utilised exclusively by Apple products, Lightning is an 8-pin connector that carries a digital signal for power or data transfer. If you’ve owned an iPhone over the past 10 years, chances are you’ve come across this cable before to charge your device or connect it to a computer. TRRS inputs have microphone input and bias voltage on the same connection (once the second R, but these days it is more likely to have it on S if I remember correctly and instead have signal ground on the second R) but those are basically only used on combined headphone outputs. The SC20 is a USB-C to USB-A cable used for connecting the Wireless GO II to a USB-A device. It is shorter than the 1.5m-long SC18 and is only included with the Wireless GO II (not sold separately). Similarly, the TCB2 allows use of both a microphone and headset, but the mic input is for XLR mics, not 3.5mm. This is great for linking more advanced, studio-grade microphones to your smartphone. I saw that regarding TRRS, there are different wiring standards with ground and mic/video inverted, still, normally left channel should be wired to the tip and right channel to the first ring, is that correct? The SC17 is a 1.5m-long USB-C to USB-C cable designed to connect RØDE microphones with a USB-C output to USB-C compatible devices. The SC17 is also Hi-Speed certified, making it ideal for connecting the NT-USB Mini or RØDECaster Pro to devices with a USB-C input, such as computers and tablets. If you just want to increase the length of your TRRS cable, the PM10EC6 is the cord for you. This male to female TRRS extension cable adds 20 feet to your connection, perfect for situations where you need some distance between your phone and the device it’s plugged into. We’ll examine several techniques to record professional audio on an iphone using external microphones. Specifically, we’ll look at methods that require minimal additional equipment to connect your existing audio recording gear to the iPhone. These are the microphones we’ll be using: On my Dell, when I plug in the TRRS cable, MaxxAudio pops up asking what I plugged in. The options are:
If you are looking for a brand product, Røde has the VXLR+ adapter for their video mics (note that the + sign is important or it will not provide plugin power), also 3.5mm TRS. As of today, all popular Android devices branded Samsung, LG, Motorola, Google Nexus, HTC, Huawei, Sony, Lenovo, Xiaomi and more, use this standard. Recording audio on the iPhone using an audio mixer or soundboard is the closest you’ll get to a traditional pro recording setup. A simple audio mixer can be a flexible, rather cost effective tool as well, but they do require a little more experience, or at least willingness to experiment and learn to ensure you get the best possible audio quality. This audio recording setup certainly isn’t difficult, though, and learning how to use it properly will translate to any future audio or multimedia recording project you work on, whether or not it involves an iPhone. HOW TO RECORD MULTIPLE AUDIO SOURCES ON AN IPHONE A TRRRS or Tip Ring Ring Ring Sleeve plug has five conductors. So far, I have seen it in a very few Sony products that allow for bidireccional stereo unbalanced. Understanding Different Cable ConnectionsMost microphones have either a 3.5mm, USB or XLR audio output (or a combination of these)for connectingthemto different devices. Even though many electronic devices utilize 3.5mm diameter connectors, not all of them are compatible with each other. TRRS connectors are most commonly used in smart devices like smartphones and tablets, but products like cameras, computers, and microphones typically feature three pole TRS interfaces. The SC21 is a 300mm USB-C to Lightning cable which is included with the AI-Micro. Similar to the SC15, it is MFi-certified, making it suitable for connecting RØDE microphones and devices with a USB-C output to iPhones or iPads with a Lightning input. SC22 – USB-C to USB-C Cable (300mm)
Most Mac computers from 2008-2013 are compatible with the exception of the Mac Pro line. There are issues with 2014 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models as well as late 2013 iMac models, making them not compatible. USB outputs are usually found on microphones intended for use with computers and mobile devices, like the RØDE NT-USB and NT-USB Mini, VideoMic Me range or Wireless GO II. Cardioid microphones are perhaps the most common microphones you would want to connect to an iPhone and they are workhorses for many people working in audio. They do not require 48V of phantom power. For this example, we’re going to connect a Shure SM-58 XLR cardioid microphone to an iPhone with a fairly simple set of adapters. We’ll also connect the tiny RodeVideoMicro to an iPhone, although instead of an XLR connection, it uses a standard consumer TRS connection. CONNECTING THE SHURE SM-58 MICROPHONE TO AN IPHONEYou often require a slimmer connection to the headphone output on your recording device. The cable adapter accommodates headphones (which may or may not include a microphone, and maybe TRS or TRRS) with larger connectors and allows them to plug into the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch, even through many cases. For these audio tests, we’re using the ShurePlus Motiv app, but Shure also has an iPhone video recording app called the ShurePlus Motiv Video. Like the audio app, it will confirm whether it is recording using the external microphone and also show the audio levels you’re recording. For even higher quality video recording and more semi-professional video tools, another popular option is the FiLMiC Pro app which also offers more control of the audio elements of your video recording. CONNECT AN XLR CONDENSER OR ANY PROFESSIONAL MICROPHONE TO AN IPHONE THROUGH AN AUDIO MIXER The SC19 is a 1.5m-long Lightning Accessory Cable (USB-C to Lightning) designed to connect MFi-certified USB-C microphones to iOS devices. SC20 – USB-C to USB-A for Wireless GO II (Not Available Separately) Here are a few PC Settings tweaks you can do if your headphones are plugged in properly, but you still can’t use the mic: The SC22 is a 300mm USB-C to USB-C cable which is included with the AI-Micro. Similar to the SC16, it is suitable for connecting RØDE microphones and devices with a USB-C output to USB-C compatible devices such as smartphones or tablets. VC1 – 3.5mm TRS Extension Cable (3m)
