Her work has been optioned for TV, adapted for stage, recorded for radio and podcasts, exhibited in galleries and distributed from a vintage Wurlitzer cigarette machine. As someone always seeking “the otherness” in storytelling because of my identity, these essays spoke to me on many levels.

If you have a hard time understanding what people mean when they say, "horror is queer," then read this book, and you'll have your answer. Covering class, race, and ability, this collection carefully untangles the threads of why we can’t look away, even when we desperately want to turn off the TV. As Legacy Russell discusses in Glitch Feminism, what cannot be defined can contain power, and horror movies have allowed queer people to see themselves in blobs, the unseen Blair Witch, and mysterious monsters. That being said, there's one essay in particular I was more than just a little uncomfortable with and its presence in the collection makes it hard for me to recommend it. She is the author of Blood Box , winner of the Black River Editor's Choice Award, and the microchap Wolf Inventory .I just made it a point to watch ALL of the films shared in this collection BEFORE reading the essays based on them.

It’s a book that doesn’t ask many questions and allows readers to sit with each author’s interests in their own intersections of identity and love for a medium that a lot of queer people find drawn to in deeply personal ways. I especially liked the early triple whammy of "Both Ways" (Carmen Maria Machado), "My Hand On the Glass" (Bruce Owens Grimm), and "The Girl, The Well, The Ring" (Zefyr Lisowski). I've spent years dissecting horror films on my own and finding the queer-coding; however, it's only been recently that I've seen that reflected back to me.Sometimes media analysis, especially if I haven't seen or read the media, is so incredibly dull to me and just not my thing.

Manages to strike the balance between in-depth, heartfelt discussions of queer identity and the coming-of-age stories of people across the spectrum with a sense of humour and lightness of touch. But I would say that if you are planning on watching any of the movies that it’s a good idea to do it beforehand since they discuss a lot of spoilers. All of these essays are so articulate and intelligent and offer some beautiful and heartbreaking perspectives on queerness in horror films.

I decided to watch all of the movies that I hadn’t already seen before reading the essays they were based around. Werewolf transformations as metaphor for what closeted individuals in the past (and some now, of course) were made to feel - as if a monster were inside them. There’s a moment in this book that’ll resonate with every single reader: undead, queer, or otherwise.
