Klarion the Witch Boy appears in Justice League Beyond. He joins forces with several magic-users to assist the Justice League fight Brainiac.Psychic Link: Klarion has an innate psychic bond with his cat, allowing him to communicate with Teekl and see through Teekl's eyes. Klarion is a young practitioner of the dark arts from Witch World, an otherworldly dimension where everyone is at least somewhat knowledgeable about dark magic. The problem was, being a child, he was constantly under the direction of adults who dictated what he could and could not do with his powers, as well as what kind of sorcery he could study. Chafing under this supervision Klarion secretly used his power to open a gateway into the normal universe, and he and his cat familiar, Teekl, embarked on a journey to learn all there was to know about witchcraft, as well as cause some chaos along the way. These five episodes were "Wing It Like Witches", "Enchanting Grom Fright", "Escaping Expulsion", "Through the Looking Glass Ruins", and "Yesterday's Lie".

a b Cowsill, Alan; Irvine, Alex; Korte, Steve; Manning, Matt; Wiacek, Win; Wilson, Sven (2016). The DC Comics Encyclopedia: The Definitive Guide to the Characters of the DC Universe. DK Publishing. p.169. ISBN 978-1-4654-5357-0. The illustrations are colorful and bright, and Aster’s facial expressions depict his thoughts beautifully. Just the idea of a boy forbidden to do magic, a traditionally female activity in the story, is enough to get my attention. Transporting himself to Themyscira in the hopes of causing trouble, Klarion sends the soul of Wonder Woman to the Region Beyond, inadvertently assisting Etrigan, who is trapped there. Sins of Youth The eldest Stone was silent for a long time. Minutes. Hours. Days. What is time to a Stone? The Youngest started to wonder if he had forgotten about her. Klarion also appeared in Infinite Crisis #6 along with many other members of DC's mystic community, an appearance which, according to Grant Morrison, takes place after Seven Soldiers.Klarion is a sorcerer of great natural ability who is able to wield magic to a nearly unlimited variety of effects, including energy projection and absorption, mind control, necromancy, shapeshifting, telekinesis, teleportation, and flight. He possesses an innate psychic bond with his familiar and is able to see through her eyes and transform her into a were-cat. He is very intelligent, with particular knowledge of the occult and sorcery. He is a skilled deceiver. He has no physical or combat skills, and is reliant on magic for self-defence. Other Media Television ok, that looks more like Calvin and Hobbes but trust me, there's a Noelle Stevenson vibe running throughout, too) The character has also been adapted in media, having made appearance in animated series such as Batman: The Animated Series, Young Justice, and Justice League Action.

Gender expectations play a huge role in The Witch Boy. Males are not “supposed to” be into magic, so Aster’s fascination with magic is subject to constant ridicule from his male peers. Aster’s beefy, alpha-male dad encourages Aster to go off into the woods to try to find his shapeshifting animal, as if Aster just isn’t trying hard enough. Charlie, a new friend for Aster, broke her leg trying to prove her athletic skills to some boys. Women are “supposed to” do magic, and men are “supposed to” be shapeshifters. I just loved so much about this book. And I won't talk too much about it. Because it felt so short while I read it. And I don't want to say everything that happens. Just a few small things that I really adored. First, I really loved Ned. Though the beginning of the book.. it is heartbreaking. We learn that Ned had a twin; Tam. That he died when they were very young. He drowned. And we get to read that scene. And it was so sad and so real and I loved it to pieces. Then we get to know their mother, who is called Sister Witch. Because she kind of is a Witch. And I loved getting to know her a little too. She was awesome. But their dad. Sigh. I don't know. I liked him later in the book. In the beginning he just seems so broken. And I couldn't be sure whether he loved Ned or not. But I do know that he did. I do. And I did like him. For the most part. Klarion played a significant part in the 2000 event Young Justice: Sins of Youth, in which he became involved in a plot by the Agenda to turn the public against the metahuman community, targeting juvenile super-heroes as the weakest link in the chain. He increased distrust and confusion at a rally for young heroes, by casting a spell that turned the teenage heroes present into adults and the adult heroes observing the rally into teenagers. In this story, under writer Peter David, he began referring to himself as "Klarion... Bum, Bum, Bum... The Witch Boy", an affectation he has since ceased. a b "Dungeons & Dragons Teams Up With HarperCollins for Young Adult Novels and Graphic Novels". ComicBook.com. July 6, 2021 . Retrieved July 6, 2021.Klarion's appearance has evolved over the years from a normal, healthy prepubescent child, to his pallid, teenage sprite-like mien. In 2021, an Ostertag graphic novel, The Girl From The Sea, was published. She described it as "teen summer romance graphic novel" set in Nova Scotia, focused on the story of a 15-year-old Korean Canadian girl named Morgan falling in love with a selkie named Keltie. [27] [a] She noted that it is somewhat based on her experience spending summers at Wilneff Island in Nova Scotia as a kid and called the book her "first serious foray" into the romance genre. The Girl from the Sea has been nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Original Graphic Novel/Anthology. [28] Stepaniuk, Casey (October 28, 2020). "Eight Trans-Inclusive Fantasy Books for Harry Potter Fans". Autostraddle. Archived from the original on November 1, 2020 . Retrieved November 4, 2020. With the help and encouragement from Charlie, a girl from outside his community who also doesn't conform to gender norms, Aster becomes brave enough to try practising his magical skills. Energy Transference: Klarion is able to empower objects with magic. He created a Rod of Power from a femur for C'th. [11] Originally, this piqued my interest because of the title and cover. Witches? Yes, please. Boy witches? Interesting! Cute kid + monster shadow? I'm in!

Such a masterpiece use of writing, and story telling abilities makes of this story one of the strongest ones I've read this year. Lots of shades of green, brown, and blue, with bright red and brown representing the evil demon thing. The characters’ eyes are expressive and show emotion well. LIBRARIANS WILL WANT TO KNOW Netflix's newest collaborator Lee was nominated for an Academy Award for his short film Adam and Dog. He’s also worked on the Oscar winner Dear Basketball, as well as Winnie the Pooh, The Princess and the Frog, and other high-profile projects including Frozen and Big Hero 6. LGBT+: The family tree includes a male couple (Jessamine and Kieran) and a female couple (Iris and Jade). Both couples have multiple children. None of the characters play prominently in the story. Gender roles and stereotypes are a major part of the theme. The mythology of the world is very interesting. There are nine Stones, three sources of magic - most gone from the world - , and wolves. There's a little provincial kingdom with a tough and benevolent queen, and a bigger, more worldly kingdom with a young tyrant. It all comes together quite smoothly, each bit having its place in a tale about the importance of words and of firmly doing good. And, well, I was a huge fan of the magic having a personality and voice of its own. The concept of it was not just interesting, but well executed.

I loved the ambiguous setting. Where and when is this? Charlie’s house is in a modern suburb, and there’s one pane that shows a computer screen at the very edge of the illustration. Her house has a garage and a basketball goal in the driveway. Aster’s family lives in the woods nearby, but they seem to live in a different time period. Technology is limited to a car, basic kitchen appliances, and a rotary phone that the demon gives Aster to “call him” (seriously, where does a demon get a rotary phone?). Some of the women wear matronly dresses that look like prairie-wear. The school house is also old-fashioned; it’s just a some wooden desks, a classroom library, and a green chalkboard. WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT THE WITCH BOY In thirteen-year-old Aster’s family, all the girls are raised to be witches, while boys grow up to be shapeshifters. Anyone who dares cross those lines is exiled. Unfortunately for Aster, he still hasn’t shifted . . . and he’s still fascinated by witchery, no matter how forbidden it might be. Not only could Klarion use his magic to wreak havoc, but his cat, Teekl, could assume a were-form under his direction. This granted her increased agility and strength, as well as augmenting her already ferocious personality. Afterwards, Klarion refuses his mother's offer to replace Submissionary Judah as leader of Limbo Town, saying: "I would like to be many things before I die, Mother. Today ... Today I shall be a soldier". Cute graphic novel! It’s a little light on plot, but it’s great for elementary readers looking for supernatural fantasy. WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE WITCH BOY
