At a time when round-the-world travel was becoming far more accessible due to commercial flights, it sparked massive interest in travel and tourism. The resulting artworks encompass sculpture, film, video, drawing and photography and explore notions of travel, movement, migration, race, class and politics. Nonetheless, the speed of rail travel has increased substantially since the 1870s, despite the priority of freight and the comparatively low general speed limit of 79 mph (127 km/h) in the US. If you didn’t fancy the lunch special, they also have a traditional menu serving up pub favourites as well.

While the Henrietta was headed for Bordeaux, Fogg manages to bribe the crew to change its course for Liverpool against the captain's wishes. With the ICA positioned in central London and SLG situated in the south of the city, this exhibition examines how location can define and influence both artistic programming and its reception. In conjunction with Architecture Week, bus and walking tours link the two venues on the weekends of 17-18 and 24-25 June. For those who want to replicate Fogg's journey more faithfully, Cunard's Queen Victoria occasionally makes a stop in Cobh (the modern name of Queenstown) on the way to Southampton, where you can get off and catch a train to Dublin (with a train change in Cork). Departures are less frequent and the entire round-the-world overland journey may need to be structured to accommodate which sea crossings are available on which days; many only run seasonally or infrequently. On the evening of 2 October 1872, while at the Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. Elizabeth Jane Cochrane ("Nellie Bly" of the Joseph Pulitzer tabloid New York World) completed an 1889 round the world overland trip in seventy-two days; Elizabeth Bisland (of Cosmopolitan magazine) completed a simultaneous, rival trip in the opposite direction in 76½ days. It’s the Lansdowne Bridge over the Indus River in Sukkur, about 150 miles north of Hyderabad in Pakistan.

However, Fogg's mistake would not have been likely to occur in the real world because a de facto date line did exist. If you’re a fan of Phileas Fogg and wanted to visit more quirky Dickensian-style bars in London, then you’ll be happy to know that Mr. In 2017, Mark Beaumont, a British cyclist inspired by Verne, set out to cycle across the world in 80 days. When the train is held up by a buffalo stampede (2,448 of them – not 2,447, not 2,449), we're suddenly in Oklahoma. While trans-oceanic and trans-continental overland journeys have diminished with the growth of air travel, travel round the world overland remains possible.

The beautiful Grade II-listed venue presents a wide range of quality shows, from pre- and post-West End Drama to record-breaking musicals, opera, dance and family entertainment. Join Fogg and his loyal valet, Passepartout, as they voyage from the misty alleys of Victorian London to the exotic subcontinent and the wild west in a race against the clock. Around the World by Steam, via Pacific Railway, was published in 1871 by the Union Pacific Railroad Company, and an Around the World in A Hundred and Twenty Days by Edmond Planchut.
